Slightly surprising that there are no Independent candidates of any of the various descriptions in either of the East Devon wards.

Fair enough, but I'm sure he's not a Liberal Demorat (we've seen this before).

The Feniton one especially ought to be very interesting for me, and in spite of (or even because of) knowing the place pretty well I haven't a clue what's going on there politically. My son lived in Feniton for over a decade and his ex-wife still is living there and 3 of my granddaughters still each have a bedroom there even though they have all moved on. Pity as that would have been another hatful of LibDem votes, I think.I tried asking my son and he also says he hasn't a clue what will happen, but reminds me that in effect there are two villages and they are very different in character. Old Feniton is the traditional village grouped round the church is rather conservative (but not these days necessarily Conservative). My family are Old Fenitonians. New Feniton is a much more fluid sort of place focussed around the railway station which I used to know well in my youth when it was called Sidmouth Junction rather than Feniton as it now is. The primary school though is in New Feniton and those three grandchildren all went there. The two villages are kept physically apart by the local geography and are joined only by a typical East Devon deep sunken lane.
I would think this is a battle which will owe a lot more to the personalities of the individual candidates than any party labels, but one might expect it to be between Tory and Lib Dem in the absence of an Independent, and could well turn into a old village v new village battle- in which case there a lot more votes in New Feniton.

I am surprised that there is not either a successor candidate to the resigning Independent councillor or an IEDA ( Independent East Devon alliance) candidate in Feniton. Somewhat unusually, the IDEA with 13/60 councillors form the council administration at the moment. 9 out of their 13 strong group are portfolio holders.

I suppose, as the Lib Dems are also part of that administration as junior partners, it is the LibDem who has been left to be the representative of that administration. Did they think Lib Dems were better at by-elections? Or was it just an Olive branch?(sorry!)

No Independent is likely to be elected unless they are an established community activist, so maybe no one came forward? Meanwhile if there is an arrangement between Lib Dems and Indies the Lib Dems can carry the flag (or branch) However it would be interesting to know if the resigning Indy is endorsing the Lib Dems, who gave her a free run in 2019

Last time LDs contested Feniton was in 2011 in a straight fight with the Tories.

One other point to pick up from the Susie Bond piece- Feniton ward is more than just Feniton parish but also includes Gittisham and Buckerell, two tiny and deeply rural villages. Even within the parish as well as the two main settlements of Old and New Feniton as described earlier there is at least one other small settlement of Fenny Bridges on the old main road and some open land with scattered farms. All of which makes it a more Tory-leaning place than if it was just the main built up area.

Perhaps reflecting that she was/ is a genuine Independent without any affinity to IEDA/ the administration.

The curse of social media strikes! Yes, but it might be influential given that it comes from the retiring long term ward member who claims to be giving a dispassionate independent view of each candidate's strength and weaknesses. I'm not sure that quite stands up. She was of course not a member of the present administration and it may not be entirely coincidental that she gives the Conservative candidate a much easier ride than to Lib Dem or Labour. She makes rather dark hints against the suitability of Todd, while giving Alasdair a bit of a thumbs up on the basis of his past experience on Thanet council. The latter might not stand up to too close an examination - I notice he never polled particularly well in his two terms on Birchington South, and the reputation of Thanet council was suspect to say the least.

Well, Todd is a very busy chap. I did not spot the tweet that says he is starting an MSc at Warwick uni in Sept, but that is a legitimate complaint. However I agree she seems to be giving him the Guido treatment.
