Yes, but you're a right wing Tory, so liking Smeeth is perfectly rational 😜 I really have given up trying to work out what is happening with Labour. It's as if they have grudgingly accepted that we aren't in the EU but absolutely refuse to engage with policy futures for that situation I think there is a strong chance you are correct about me liking Smeeth because I am a Zionist Tory Brexiteer.  (I am serious) Well, exactly....and I'm none of those things, particularly the Zionist one!

We need a thread about MPs we hate & why we hate them! There was one, at least prior to the 2019 general election. It was more of a competition though - naming MPs who we would want to see defeated and seeing who would be the last one standing.
Though sadly it did not reach its conclusion, and we did not determine which MP was the one least disliked by the forum.

Before the election my most hated in general was Helen Goodman (thankfully she lost!) and in the Tory party a strong 3 way between Andrew Mitchell , Maria Miller & Hugo Swire.

Mary Creagh was a classic example of the "never set foot in the constituency before going for selection" tendency in the PLP, her hilariously bad leadership bid in 2015 is still "fondly" remembered. Phillipson is at least local to her area, and also OK to look at Hold on, I thought Mary Creagh was a bus driver on diet! Phillipson may be a local but acted like she was from Highgate...... Ironically, in the pre-2010 selection for Sunderland South the main challenge for Phillipson was Barbara Roche, recently defeated in Hornsey. First prefs were Philipson 97 Roche 94 Twist 13 Final round 106 to 99 The Wasghington Sunderland West selection which took place some months before was Hodgson (at the time MP for Gateshead East and Washington West) 121 votes Phillipson 83 Elliott 18 Bi 6 McArdle 3 Vasey 0 And finally, the Sunderland Central ended up with Julie Elliott 106 Celia Gofton 75 Lee Vasey 1

(tells you all you need about my opinion of Roche) In the 2005 GE Barbara Roche lost the previously safe Labour seat of Hornsey & Wood Green to the Lib Dems on a spectacular swing. I have it on reasonably good authority that she had spent the campaign telling volunteers that the seat was totally secure and they should go to seats where their efforts might make a difference. She arrived at the count still supremely confident, right up to the point when the boxes began to be opened. The story goes that she then, very red in the face, asked for the use of a private room, from which she could be heard by everyone screaming abuse at her agent.

Hornsey and Wood Green was not a safe Labour seat. It was Tory until 1992 when Barbara Roche won it. And she was certainly well aware of the electoral threat from the Liberal Democrats, as her constituency work abruptly changed direction in about 2003 and increasingly became a poor impersonation of what the Lib Dems were doing. This was never going to work and unfortunately it lumbered the seat with the appalling Lynne Featherbrain for a decade.

Thanks for putting me right about that, David, although it's always a shame to see the facts getting in the way of a good story.

It is way easier to accuse jews of being globalist open-border who try to make the english people a minority in their own country (I of course storngly disagree with this bunch of bullocks) when Barbara Roche opens the border for everyone that ever stepped foot in the EU!

I think that's very curious thinking - as if somehow everyone from a particular religious background must have the same opinion on an unrelated topic. There is nothing which I dictates that any religion holds a specific view on globalisation, the EU or any other non-religious issue.

As you know I am jewish brexiteer and therefore strongly agree that it absurd to think that just because of my religion/ethnicity I would be Communist/Ultra Capitalist or a Globalist. Unfortunatly there are people that always look for an excuse for hating certain people. Its why I am always trying to be pluralistic and understanding (like being a strong Zionist having a mature convisation with an anti-Zionist).

Barbara Roche was a pretty unremarkable New Labour MP, though. I recall she was very supportive on LGB rights at the time.

In retrospect one has to wonder why no one in the goverment raised the alarm bells that the immingration policy was a bit too "loose" compared to the rest of the EU to say the least....
