The coalition will be expanded so that they can pass the Senate too. But with minor parties bargaining is possible. Rutte loves making deals with small parties and the Left. His party members hate it, but he always gets his way. Any ideas on who he will go with? Is he a big europhile? If so, Volt could be about to fast passed into major politics. Otherwise the CU could be back in.
It will depend on the legislation. Last time D66 wanted GL in so they didn't become the sacrificial lamb. This time they may ask PvdA, which given they are both basically vehicles for Kaag-like figures to enter politics, I think PvdA will accept.

VVD losing around Amsterdam, while gaining in the peripheries. Painful results for CDA and SP, especially in their ex-fortresses.

Oh to live in a country where liberal parties come first AND second! Congrats to Rutte. He's very much my kind of liberal - patriotic and realistic liberalism that gets results and keeps the loons locked out. We could learn a lot from him. I pretty much agree, but good to distinguish between Rutte and the VVD. The party increasingly resembles the Tories (albeit moderate by UK standards), whereas Rutte is a genuine, though right-wing, liberal.

I do like Rutte despite his politics. He seems like a fairly normal man with a very down-to-earth approach to the job. Something to really respect. Does look like a bad night for left wing parties. Curious if any of them did poorly in the debates or just the wrong politics for the wrong time.

For me he sums up everything I dislike about right wing liberalism, with none of the positives of a liberal outlook (extreme risk aversion on Covid, for example). In many ways he and his party are much more of a clearly right wing economically liberal oarty -most of them would align more with the Cameron and Osborne brand of Conservatism.

I think he's more of a Clegg (or vice-versa), but I'd say that with his party he's probably more like the Coalition overall.

He himself began rather on the party's left wing. But You are certainly right on VVD - for example a red-blue coalition PvdA&VVD was (contrary to Belgium) unthinkable before CDA's refusal to continue in government made the PurpleCoalition necessary.

It was almost taken for granted that PvdA would improve somewhat on their dismal result last time - so why didn't it happen?

Like with CDA having to change candidate at the proverbial last minute didn't help.

So no party of the left won any municipality and they only achieved two second places Specifically they got three second places: in Eemsdelta and Pekela by the SP, and in Wageningen by GroenLinks. In the municipalities where GL finished first in 2017, they finished third in all such cases in 2021.
