OK - let me expand on the point. Eddie Izzard is an entertainer who uses his skills to manipulate audiences. As an MP he would find those skills pretty much redundant - there are very few MPs who personally make much of an impact politically in the Commons - so is he deluding himself by thinking that he might have an audience in parliament, or is he actually prepared to put the ego necessary for his current career to one side in order to sit in the Commons listening to boring speeches which change nothing, troop through lobbies, and answer endless emails from constituents with their trivial (or serious) problems? Eddie has wanted to be an elected politician for a long time. Originally an MEP or Mayor of London

"...miners...shop stewards...milliners, drapers.." - I wonder how long ago a milliner or a draper stood for parliament? There was a Conservative tailor who made it to being Speaker in my lifetime.

Having joined the family firm, originally based in Ascot and Newbury. A "Sporting Tailor" winning awards for their breeches. In World War I the designation was amended to "Sporting and Military tailor". They got a lot of custom from the officers of the Belgian army apparently.
The Tailor and Cutter (16th Feb 1911) gives a snap shot of Weatherill Senior's early career mentioning that he confessed to having "pulled the brake" on his first job, which presumably means he was fired for some misdemeanor, but "was fortunate enough to get another situation in less than an hour in the West End" (those were the days).

I presume tim means Edward Timpson. Who is/was a barrister. Indeed, but family firm and all that. And maybe timmullen1 means somebody else. I'm just surmising.

Eddie has wanted to be an elected politician for a long time. Originally an MEP or Mayor of London The post-1999 list system allowed more 'broad brush' people to come out of the woodwork. It is difficult to imagine Izzard or, eg, Claud Moraes being a constituency focused MEP. Ditto Farage. Maybe not Cashman though, he seemed quite assiduous and not in it purely to bang on about his own hobby horses (even though he did).

I went into a Timpsons last year and asked if they could sharpen garden tools. They said they could, but the company doesn't allow them to, so they can't, and said I should go to any store that has a key cutting service which isn't a Timpsons. Despite that, I do still use them for key cutting and shoe repairs. Maybe one for the 'old trades that are still just hanging on' thread.

Timpsons is one of the finest companies on the High Street and is owned by one of the finest families in the UK. I have not had need of their services in a couple of years, but I am in awe of them. Agreed. I recently visited my local Timpsons on a Sunday to cut a key. It was about the time the shops were closing. I asked the man behind the counter if I could go to the nextdoor supermarket to get some groceries while he was cutting the key. There was a long queue at the supermarket and the Timpsons guy tracked me down, presented me with the key and despite me asking to pay him refused to take my money as the shop was closed. Marvellous customer service and typical of other good experiences I have had with them.

Timpsons also have an extremely strong and admirable record of employing ex-convicts, and James Timpson (the Chief Exec, and brother of the MP, Edward) is a big advocate for prisoner rehabilitation. I believe the family are broadly Conservative, and the company has made political donations quite specifically in favour of Edward's career. However, James Timpson has not been uncritical of some Conservative policies on prisons.

It's remarkable there hasn't been some sort of 'boycott/cancel Timpsons' campaign on social media.
Unless there has.

Tedious anecdote alert: During the 2008 Crewe & Nantwich by-election (where Edward Timpson's parliamentary career began) the Agent and I went to the Municipal Buildings to hand in our candidate's nomination papers. We'd arrived early so we sat on the Square outside to wait time (it was a nice sunny day). A random member of the public came up to us and asked "D'you know if there's anywhere in town I can get some shoes repaired?" So I directed him to the nearest Timpsons.
