It remains little short of incredible the LibDems didn't take this seat at the last GE, even if their campaigning was in some way handicapped by the by-election that never was. Very bad strategy to deliver so many generic leaflets (and the utterly foolish Revoke policy which pissed off many supporters). No way a Labour candidate with some responsibility for tree felling would have won against a localist campaign

I put it down to you having a much better candidate, a good campaign, and the Boris/Brexit effect on the Conservative vote depressing the LD tactical vote. I completely disagree that Labour had a better candidate, but agree with the rest of your assessment.

I think he meant a much better candidate than Jarred O'Mara, at least that is how I read it.

Sorry. It was poorly expressed.

'a much better candidate than Jarred O'Mara' is a descriptor that can be applied to every candidate for every party at every election ever.
Apart from O'Mara himself, obviously.

Is 'Jarred' O'Mara a gibe at his alcohol intake, or (as I suspect) just sloppy spelling?

With the repeal of the Fixed Term Parliament Act sometime soon - then the only lasting constitutional reform by a member for Sheffield Hallam will be the Jared O'Mara inspired rule change to allow no ties in the chamber. Bizarrely he'll have done more to modernise British democracy than his predecessor.

I was struggling to think of something and hit on the Silk Commission, but their recommendations didn't go before Parliament until after 2015.

It goes down with tuition fees in the annals of Lib Dem self harm..

Does seem a bit on the harsh side when you compare with the other MPs that received prison sentences. Is fraudulently claiming money to fund a cocaine habit better or worse than fraudulently claiming money just because you want more money?

I suppose it's systematic, with him being found guilty on six counts. Most of the other MPs are just a single act rather than what amounts to repeat offending.

As a metaphor for what has happened to the entire country since the Lib Dems were rejected by the voters, it's delicious.

I agree, it's shows what is still better than having a Liberal Democrat MP.
