Wasn't he in any case too old to claim the redundancy money? Yes. It may have been a private joke - the MP for South Hams at the time was Anthony Steen who at the previous GE had attracted some unfavourable attention for chicken-running from his abolished Liverpool constituency. Weren't the CLP desperate for a candidate and he said "Ok, I'll do it".

Weren't the CLP desperate for a candidate and he said "Ok, I'll do it". Hamilton said he knew that some CLPs found themselves short of a candidate at very short notice before the election, and offered himself as an experienced candidate to stand in any no-hope seat if they wanted him. South Hams happened to be the one. He wasn't a paper candidate - I believe he stayed in a hotel in the constituency through the campaign, and went round actively canvassing.

I'm changing my mind on Jared O'Mara, he shouldn't resign as I've come to realise that his proven qualities make him ideal to make him our next Prime Minister. Yes, I think his attitudes and abilities fit perfectly, a perfect match to his would be predecessors, no one will spot any difference. 👍 Btw I can't help reading your name as Alien Ted

We are living through an amazing period of turmoil caused by Brexit but not entirely Brexit related. This reallignment of the political heavens does not need to be an excuse for members here to descend into blithering idiocy.

Does the sitting MP now have to stand in the same constituency (or, in the event of boundary changes, one that contains part of their outgoing seat)? Or can they still stand absolutely anywhere they like and still collect it? (I seem to recall a case of a retiring Labour MP who went and got the nomination in a solid Conservative seat in the Home Counties because of this.) Yes. It was Willie Hamilton best known as scourge of the Royals but actually a right wing Labour man on every other issue. I think he stood for South Hams in Devon after being deselected There was also Frank Hooley who was deselected for Sheffield Heeley and stood in Stratford-on-Avon in 1983.

If I remember rightly, he lived in Sutton Coldfield, so Stratford was relatively local. I have a feeling that he was a Labour paper candidate for a Sutton ward in Birmingham city council elections in the later 80s - anyone know if I am remembering that correctly?

O'Mara will fight this at the next election as he probably needs the cash.

I imagine finding the cash will be easy with the salary he is on. It's the payoff which will ease the pain when he loses as a sitting MP.

I guess that waste of space MP still hasn’t resigned?
Next resignation date 21st Oct. A full seven weeks after he said he’d go.
Not bad for £6,300 after tax.

He stood in Sutton Vesey in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1993 (by election) and 1994 finishing third on each occasion with vote shares ranging from 8.5% to 14.9%. He also stood in Sutton New Hall in 1990 coming second with 23.3%

I've just watched Look North report on him. There was a lady complaining that she had a council-related issue and couldn't get an interview with her Parliamentarian. Not being unsympathetic, but didn't it ever occur to her that it's *councillors* that are there to deal with council-related issues, and she'd have three to pick from. (And almost all the filming was in Walkley!)
