I wonder if there might be a contest for second place in Sheffield Hallam between Labour and the Tories.

I'd got the impression that this was going to happen from some of the exchanges in the last few days. The earliest a by-election could actually be held is early October I think (writs can't be moved in the recess if the vacancy was caused by resignation, for some reason) so there's a chance of this being overtaken by events.
Lib Dems will win if it does happen.

I am not sure who will move the writ since he is no longer a Labour MP. I think the earliest it could be held is 10th October but I may be wrong about that. He is saying he needs to wait until Parliament reassembles on 3rd September but I am not aware that you cannot apply for the Chiltern Hundreds during the recess. It would not make any difference to the date of any by-election.

There have been cases of councillors leaving their party and getting in a confused mess because they lack a whip to advise them on what they have to do. This may be a similar case.

The Greens may do fairly well here too I do hope so. I look forward to a big campaign with a first rate candidate. I hope that there are a lot of serious candidates here.

Would Oliver Coppard Labour's 2015 candidate be a potential runner here?

Would Oliver Coppard Labour's 2015 candidate be a potential runner here? Do you mean as an independent candidate? Labour's candidate is Olivia Blake.

Would Oliver Coppard Labour's 2015 candidate be a potential runner here? No. He is on record as saying he would not stand again there because of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

We seem to go through this every other week. He took a job in London I think, which if not politically restricted, would certainly rule him out.

Didn't say it did, but he was not available to stand from very soon after the 2015 election whatever people might have wanted. The left would have been wanting their own candidate in any case, and indeed they got him....
