Labour, Greens and LDs alike are all in a struggle for relevance and supremacy in Sheffield. For the Greens to stand aside for the LDs would surely raise eyebrows in the city, especially in the wards in which they are competitive? That’s why I left it “or” as they’d probably need pistols at dawn to reach an agreement. I haven’t looked at Ward results to see if one is clearly stronger than the other in Hallam so purposely left it open. Sheffield election results are on J.G.Harston's website. mdfs.net/Docs/Sheffield/Election/

If a VNOC is being moved, I doubt there will be a by election at all.

I don't know if we have selected yet, but it would be interesting if Natalie Bennett stood. Bennett has strong designs on Sheffield Central and no point standing in a by election she will definitely lose.

Laura Gordon has been running surgeries in Sheffield Hallam since O'Mara stopped doing them and was selected ages ago, whereas so far as I know Sarah Olney has never been near Sheffield. She's also PPC for Richmond Park.

Lib Dem gain is the obvious outcome here but I'm going to play it safe and say it's not a definite win. I do think that Labour will come second here (except in the unlikely scenario in which they do win it). That's not to say that the Greens don't have the potential to do okay here - and it is certainly somewhere where LD-Green co-operation is less likely (although I've seen one Green activist already suggest standing down here in return for Sheffield Central in the next GE). My guess is Lib Dems, Labour, Conservatives, Brexit Party and the Greens in that order all running and keeping their deposits. A Hallam - Central arrangement would seem logical. If such arrangements are to continue ...

I haven’t looked at Ward results to see if one is clearly stronger than the other in Hallam so purposely left it open. Lib Dems are clearly ahead of the Greens (and won all 5 seats), although the Green vote share is certainly respectable and just edges out Labour in to 2nd highest. Well there are two bar charts we definitely won’t be using!

I'd got the impression that this was going to happen from some of the exchanges in the last few days. The earliest a by-election could actually be held is early October I think (writs can't be moved in the recess if the vacancy was caused by resignation, for some reason) so there's a chance of this being overtaken by events. Lib Dems will win if it does happen. That could just be magic timing. For your move?

After this, there will have been by-elections in 2/3 of the party leaders’ seats in 2010, after Witney in 2016.

Weren't the labour party and its minions always whiining on about UKIPs lack of candidate vetting when some community councillor or other made some outrageous statement or other?
Gross hypocrisy of the highest order as is par for the course in lefty circles I guess.
