If we where finished before 1939 please explain how on Earth we had cabinet members between 2010 and 2015?

Labour are effectively finished as a national party of government thanks to their contradictory views on Brexit which has created the biggest constitutional crisis since the second word war . Corbyn has been worse than useless on this subject. If we do crash out of the EU Labour can expect to lose dozens of seats across remain supporting London to the Liberal Democrats. Expect more progressive members to resign their membership on mass. The prospect of the anti-Conservative vote being divided is music to my ears. Unfortunately, it will prove too good to be true.

Unlike the Conservative Party which is increasingly made up of elderly white males whose average age is 64 my party has seen tens of thousands of members join since the country has recognized that we are the principal party that will fight the treatous disaster that is Brexit. Our party is growing whilst your membership is literally dying off.

We are old and dying off (you LDs love to gloat on our immenent deaths don't you?)........It has become a veritable meme in your party when discussing Brexit or my Party...........The thought of Death scything through our ranks! Trouble is old sport, your type were saying this to me at Maidstone in the 1960s when you had, what was it? Oh! 6-Seats Wow! But you were gaining control of the town council and when I went to Ashford you were doing the same there. Perfect bloody nuisance your party was then. I know...because my Labour friends agreed. Always had some Labour friends, still do. Understand them and respect them and oppose them of course. Can't think of more than 2-LD friends in a long life. That is because of that sort of unctuous bollocks perpetrated by you and Tony and Izzy and Cogload and the Dog. You are a vicious nasty bunch, but I suppose it is difficult to live with terminal failure and complete irrelevence for so many decades. And for all you say of us...........we have so many more MPs! Old and dying but just so much more popular.

But Maidstone? We're running the council!

Well made point YP. I have edited out the offensive sentence in full from my post. I should have checked and not relied on memory.

Where was this 15% in *Gloucester* then?? I hope the rest of his "analysis" is more accurate than that.

The Conservative and formerly Unionist party is about to go through a full scale existential crisis. Carlton is part of this.
We should all be sympathetic to the suffering and attentive to his needs.

The Conservative and formerly Unionist party is about to go through a full scale existential crisis. Carlton is part of this. We should all be sympathetic to the suffering and attentive to his needs. Thank you cogload for that robust show of concern which I shall take at face value. I am a student of modern Philosophy and I have read some of the core Existensialist works, opaque and difficult though most of them are. I know what it really means and I know the dictionary definition which is a dull, blunt and very slanted to a minor faction of mainstream Existentialism. I never warmed to this mode of thought but note the effect it has had on modern life and especially literature and the lack of positivism in politics. As to myself, attentive readers of some other threads from past years will know that I have clearly stated the following position... There is no Divine Spark No Central Cause No Plan towards... No Purpose with a desired result. All is flux and just happens. The world supporting life is a temporary occurance and unlikely to be replicated anywhere. So, did I ever think that.... I was special I was important My life had meaning (at least for me) That it had a purpose That I was moving to a known and perhaps desired objective I can honestly assert that from about 10 I have been quite certain that none of those applied. I am here by chance on the one planet with life and we are here because we are here because we are here. There is no plan and there was never a purpose because the concept of having a purpose is inherently absurd and predicated on assuaging human fears of unknowns. So, that means I have always lived in your concept of a permanent and continuing Existential Crisis as well as a personal one. Perhaps that is true? But a crisis endured for a complete life is unlikely to inflict a panic attack upon me at this advanced age. Within the terms of your short-form analysis of there being an existential crisis in my party and in many of the members, I understand your reasoning and within the general terms of the lowbrow use of the term I see some truth as to party and members, but a bit less as to Johnson and not at all as to me. I have no crisis because I don't really care enough for it to matter deep in my psyche. I fume and boil on the surface but it is only surface and can be controlled at will. You see, for those of us with no inner core of belief and no concept of their being any plan or purpose to anything at all, nothing actually matters except in our own personal tangible circumstances and access to the comforting ambiguity of high culture. That is the short version!

I think you could have left the "fucking" Carlton, just hanging in space as a sign you don't want to be compared to a summer's day? Shall I compare Me to a Winter's day? He art less lovely and less temperate. Rough winds do shake the fucking buds of May............... Was that a good start? It retained the fucking, changed the season to one more appropriate to me but left in the month of my nativitee. And that last phase in the original was borrowed by H G Bates for one of his books. I served the author as a young bank cashier at the Charing sub branch to Lloyds Bank where he called every week for his new notes and to be rude to people. I still know how to craft a little post for a Saturday.

I have only just seen the correspondence following my initial post - at least you didnt have to wait 7 years. Have to say that i am not certain why the Carlton guy thought it was intrusive and aggressive? Intrusion? Do I need to pass through some kind of masonic ritual to be allowed to post or is this site open to all? What was aggressive? Sounds like he needs to stock up on chill pills before brexit kicks in.

If this is meant to be a thread about local by-election sit has sadly deteriorated. Where are the % changes in the votes in the by-elections on Thursday? Why are we being treated to the personal philosophy of some grumpy old Tory?
Why are we not having a discussion about the Gloucester results which in current circumstances are actually quite interesting? (Labour losing a seat and coming fourth??? What is that all about?)

I think he was responding to your username mainly. Any literary reference is a challenge... If you keep posting on here, as i hope you will, you will realise that Carlton likes to wind people up

Agreed, Tony. It's coming to something when one fuming old Conservative can shut down debate on why his party is doing so badly just by flying off the handle at people.

And you said I was aggressive? Ah well - as Tony Greaves rightly said - this should be about local by election performance. Are there any more cases coming up where the Brexit P is standing and might let the Liberals in by taking votes off the Tories?
