So what are the facts in Shetland then, not the hyperbole, or the wishes of posters, but the actual facts? A huge swing to the SNP in a by election after 12 years of leading in Holyrood.
Lib-Dems down nearly 20% which is not a good sign for their new leader.
Tories and Labour amassing less than 5% between them.
Spin things as you might, but I don't see anything to worry about here for the SNP. A huge swing after a massively popular incumbent MSP stood down, resulting in a by-election where the SNP could spend 100k on a seat with less than 20k voters. The SNP did do well, but it's an okay enough result for us too, and probably the conclusion is that both the SNP and LDs are in a (relatively, looking at the position of each party) good position. Really the only thing I think you could take away from the result is that Scottish Labour, in spite of starting with a very low base, manage to do worse than you would expect them too, which is really saying something.

Is there not still a thing where Western Isles don’t count on a Friday for religious reasons; wasn’t the Scottish Euro result in June delayed until Saturday lunchtime because they had to wait for their numbers? It's actually Sunday, with them not counting until Monday. This popped every five years with the European elections, often irritating politicians in the rest of Scotland because the results were usually clear (WI being such a small electorate) but couldn't be officially announced on the night. Lately Scottish Twitter has got upset as well. However a Thursday polling day doesn't present problems. It seems they now use a helicopter to pick up all the ballot boxes in time. Yes, sorry, realised my error but been unable to get back to correct it. Apologies.

Just to introduce a bit of balance I am sure if the roles had been reversed the Lib Dems would have been reacting to the result in much the same way as the SNP.
Btw I am a Lib Dem member. I feel almost certain Carlton can smell it anyway! Just cant be ar*ed to get myself coloured yellow (actually currently I am even Chair of a Constituency - in the Tories that would seem to give almost mystical influence over the direction of the Party. In the Lib Dems it is just the last person standing in some meeting)

In contrast, Labour's gain of the Western Isles in 1987 was one of the earliest results announced that night. Is there not still a thing where Western Isles don’t count on a Friday for religious reasons; wasn’t the Scottish Euro result in June delayed until Saturday lunchtime because they had to wait for their numbers? There are certainly a few Muslims in Stornoway but I don't think they refuse to do things on a Friday for their benefit... They would not count on a Sunday though.

More likely the high road that goes through most of the main islands apart from Barra - I suppose that it makes sense to somehow be speedier with the outlying islands when the rest is getting there more quickly.

I was talking to a Muslim shopkeeper in Stornoway a number of years ago and asked whether Ramadan in June when there was virtually no hours of darkness was a problem. He replied that they took their timings from Morocco. How splendidly pragmatic!

Some will follow the timings of sunrise and sunset in their home cities, others in the below Arctic Circle city they've most recently come from, others in the main city in the country (obviously easier to do in Sweden than Iceland), others in a holy city. It can lead to quite a bit of local variation.

Remember the Only Fools And Horses episode with a tenants' meeting? The chairman couldn't start it without a vice-chairman so Trigger nominated Rodney. The meeting then commenced with item 1 - Chairman's Resignation.

My guess is that they used to have to operate with one count area, but now are permitted to be split across two different counts? I don't think so! Ahh, I suppose there's a flight each night providing Royal Mail service been Orkney and Shetland that can carry the boxes.

I took over as Treasurer and foolish promised to stay until I'd sorted the accounts out. It seems that every meeting I go to somebody says "oh, I just found this reciept under the settee".

I believe it works well in the Welsh borders...

I will be fascinated to see the expense returns on this. I suspect the SNP spent more on this than they did for the entire EU referendum.
