Snap elections called after Tsipras and Syrzia got a kicking in the Euros last night.

Though it was actually less bad than polls had generally predicted, which may be a factor behind this decision?

Though it was actually less bad than polls had generally predicted, which may be a factor behind this decision? I think another factor in this is that the departure of the Independent Greeks (ANEL) leaves him friendless and struggling to govern. He only survived in January because some ANEL members defied party orders and backed him. I suspect Syriza will run on a "who governs?" message with a heavy emphasis on a binary struggle with ND. Interestingly, recent polling shows a fair few of the minor parties getting kicked out. It could be just ND, Syriza, Golden Dawn, KINAL and KKE. It might be that neither ND nor Syriza can cobble something together, and Tsipras holds on with heavy concessions.

As far as i remember SYRIZA did only minimally better than in OpinionPolls. But at the EP-election the left parties received nontheless a majority of votes - enough, when squeezed, that Tsipras could reach the relative majority.

In the regional&local elections ND has done - to noone's surprise - very well: Won all regions less leftwing Crete (a cons.Ind. was elected in NorthernAegeis); what means, that they gained Attica from SYRIZA (and the IonianIslands). Athens fell to ND (but incl. POTAMI), Thessaloniki to another cons.Indep., Piraeus to PASOK's new vehicle, Patras once again to KKE, Larissa to SYRIZA.

There is on YouTube a delightful cabride on the Peloponnese from Piraeus to Corinth. A 3ft6 ramshackle railway clinging to the slopes. Helpfully for the local thieves the Greek railways just closed it and left everything in situ.
Now mostly superseded.

Anyone following this? Seems to have been a quiet campaign.

Anyone following this? Seems to have been a quiet campaign. I didn't even know it was happening until just now when I went onto Ladbrokes politics to check some of the odds for various leadership elections and saw the odds for this election (1/33 for New Democracy to win most seats btw)

Varoufakis is literally begging for votes, claiming that if his gang don't make it into parliament, ND will have untrammeled power.
It'd take a heart of stone not to laugh.

Not only did I not know that, it has caused me to check out Evangelos Venizelos of PASOK and find, contrary to my assumption, that he isn't.

It amazes me that "Venizelism" still rears its head in Greece. A mindset that led to the murder and deportation of thousands of Greeks.

I didn't know that. You learn something new every day! I also only learned that today, but not from greenhert I've just found out that the former foreign minister (and leader of her own failed party) Dora Bakoyannis is Mitsotakis's older sister.
