There's a constituency poll? no, it's merely an extrapolation of a national poll. By-elections tend to show larger swings against the government than national polls do (Newport West was a bit of an exception), and I'm referring to the ComRes national poll, which showed a swing from Conservative to Lib Dem of 13.75% - more than enough to take this seat. Not as far gone as Montgomeryshire and the LDs also hold the Assembly seat.

If Kirsty stood she would certainly be a shoo in though Labour would be loath to lose her at Education, and her vote is important in propping up the Labour Government in Wales. The Lib Dems candidate will be Jane Dodds, she has already been selected as PPC regardless of whether this comes to a by-election. Both statements are probably correct. Dodds will be the candidate. Williams would be a shoo in. That Kirsty is in Cardiff Bay rather than in Westminster is - arguably - to the detriment of the party. (Bit like the Scottish Conservative scenario.)

£1500 fine, costs and 50 hours community service.
The Speaker of The Commons will now write to Powys Council to start a recall petition.

It very inconvenient timing with the Euros now probably on. Will there be the spare resource to campaign for sigs here now?

Let's face it neither of our parties will come close to getting an MEP in Wales, but you'd have a real chance in this seat...

As for clashing with the Euros, given the LDs have never won a MEP in Wales I would hope the party's campaigners will focus on the petition rather than the elections. The petition is open for six weeks, so will outrun the Euros so I don't see the timing as being problematic. Edit: Beaten to it by Tony

It surely should be possible for a decent campaign to manage both anyway?

If they're really serious about getting as many pro-EU MEPs as possible, surely they should focus entirely on this and give Plaid a free-run at the fourth Welsh seat?

Incidentally, Davies hasn't been suspended from the party or parliamentary group. Slap on the wrist

I think they need to focus resources entirely on the recall petition in B&R. We stand a far greater chance of making gain in any by-election there than winning a seat in Wales come the European elections. It would likely lead to greater publicity too.

Incidentally, Davies hasn't been suspended from the party or parliamentary group. Slap on the wrist If this does go to a recall election, having narrowly hit the 10% threshold, the Conservative selection will be fascinating. The Tories won't be able to get away with such a lukewarm statement if they have to decide to back or dump him. Or will they take the Richmond Park approach and duck nominating so he can run as an "Independent" Probably with the same result. And right now, a single vote off the Government's majority counts.

I hope the recall petition succeeds. Chris Davies' sentence was what I consider "unduly lenient" given the seriousness of his offence.

Perhaps quite unfairly I imagine Powys Council receiving the letter via its Secretary & Solicitor who then arranges for it to be placed before the appropriate committee at its next scheduled meeting in September, subject to the Chairman being available (he might be at the ram sales which would require the meeting to be rearranged) ...

Won't they require it to be translated into Welsh first? Not for Radnorshire. Not for Radnorshire. Speaking Welsh in Radnorshire was once memorably described as comparable to being gay in the 80s. Tolerated. Between consenting adults. In private.
