Not for Radnorshire. Not for Radnorshire. Speaking Welsh in Radnorshire was once memorably described as comparable to being gay in the 80s. Tolerated. Between consenting adults. In private. Is this a place where they would happily dump Welsh-language road signs, if they were allowed to? Doubt it. Bilingual signs are pretty widely accepted these days, even in Radnorshire. And, of course, it's the sort of area where - in theory at least - the proportion of people with a knowledge of Welsh is actually increasing.

Won't they require it to be translated into Welsh first? Not for Radnorshire. Not for Radnorshire. Speaking Welsh in Radnorshire was once memorably described as comparable to being gay in the 80s. Tolerated. Between consenting adults. In private. People got on the train today at Newtown and got off at Caersws and were speaking Welsh to each other. I must admit I was slightly surprised. Yes, I had a day trip to Aberystwyth today.

I hope the recall petition succeeds. Chris Davies' sentence was what I consider "unduly lenient" given the seriousness of his offence. Frankly it wasn't a serious offence. No money was claimed that wasn't due. It looks like the Conservatives aren't going to dump him. Given current political preoccupations it's by no means sure that the 10% will be reached.

Yes, but they're both in Montgomeryshire. Which is very different from Radnorshire. And has been for a very long time. As long ago as 1891 Montgomeryshire was 50.4% Welsh-speaking (25.6% monoglot); Radnorshire was 6.2% Welsh-speaking (0.5% monoglot).

I hope the recall petition succeeds. Chris Davies' sentence was what I consider "unduly lenient" given the seriousness of his offence. Why so? Because he's an MP and thus held to a higher standard, or because you view invoice fiddling as serious regardless of the value or whether there was personal gain, or because you view sentences as light generally because you can't contemplate a criminal act yourself or some other reason?

I am in favour of a recall, but I can't agree that this is "unduly lenient". A first-time offender, unlikely to be dangeous, pleads guilty. To an offence and of a value that thousands of people won't see the inside of a cell for, and don't. It just reminds me of that lass who stabbed her boyfriend and was let off chokey due to "potential". Davies like Onasanya are hardly a threat to anyone.

Tell you what, if you thought that recall petitions were going to just gather dust from lack of use.... Is this a first two recall petitions at the same time?
Err.... yes, there's only been one previously...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-48038005But the MP was defended by his constituency chairman Peter Weavers, who said the Brecon and Radnorshire consistency association "was 100% supportive of Chris"."He's immediately accepted that he's made an error," said. "He's been caught by a piece of law which is arcane.""I think the nature of the sentence, the modest sentence, reflects the nature of the case." He added: "We've had dozens and dozens of calls and comments commending him for what he has done over the four years that he's been an MP. "We want good MPs that fight for Brecon and Radnorshire - I would be urging him to stay on the ballot."

Arcane? The law was passed in 2009, and it ought to have been obvious that creating a false invoice was dodgy.

Bercow has just formally announced the recall petition. I wonder if it will be successful?
In Peterborough, the MP has actually done prison time, but there doesn't seem to be much prospect of a by-election.

Says who? Iain Paisley, of the famously switched on and definitely marginal North Antrim, almost had one, and that was when four times fewer polling stations were operating.

6 polling stations, 5303 needed to trigger a by-election. You would hope we have the resources to make that happen.
Setting up another 5297 polling stations looks like a tall order though

Setting up another 5297 polling stations looks like a tall order though I reckon there are enough villages in the constituency to give that a good go, caravans have been used polling stations before!

These locations will be open for signing:
Monday, 9am to 5pm (except spring bank holiday Monday) Tuesday, 8am to 5pm Wednesday, 9am to 8pm Thursday, 9am to 5pm Friday, 9am to 5pm
Not helpful, compared to Peterborough, but not impossible

Over 21,000 people voted for someone other than Chris Davies in 2017, it's going to be difficult but hopefully enough of them will sign the petition.
