Aztec Empire, Yopitzinco (1367). Liberal Demaztec to Inca-pendent. "I'll get my Quetzalcoatl". Yesterday I was curious about the mention of Moctezuma, and I wondered why he is called “Moctezuma” not “Montezuma”. It turns out that both spellings are equally incorrect (because of metathesis and other reasons) and that his name was more like “motekwso:maa”, so the Spaniards transposed the k to be before the t (a bit like the Spanish “cocodrilo” instead of “crocodile”) and then changed it to an n because they thought “Monte-“ sounded better. |
