It will be interesting how many Tories defect to UKIP over the coming months

Four Conservative councillors on Brentwood DC have resigned from the Conservative group on the council over disagreements on the way local issues have been handled . They include one councillor who hoined the Conservatives from the Lib Dems in January giving his reason as ............... the way the Lib Dems were handling local issues .

Hi folks
Brian Chalker, ex Mayor of Bath & chair of B&NES, Tory to Indy.
TBF this is the 3rd Tory to Indy in the past few months here, & appears to be less to do with politics per se, & more to do with local backbiting & incompetence. Expect to see a change of leadership ( using the term in its loosest sense) in the new year.

TBF this is the 3rd Tory to Indy in the past few months here, & appears to be less to do with politics per se, & more to do with local backbiting & incompetence. Expect to see a change of leadership ( using the term in its loosest sense) in the new year. It's fascinating watching B&NES Tory group slowly disintegrating. They failed miserably in the last general election, leaving Bath as one the safest Lib Dem seats, and then lost out heavily at the last local elections, losing seats and control of the council against the trend elsewhere. Now they have lost 3 of their councillors to become Independents. This makes the Independent grouping the same size as Labour's here. It's obvious that the Tory group are not a happy bunch, but Bryan's decision does also seem to have come about from disillusion with the national party. However, if anyone is thinking that this may be part of the general trend from Conservative to UKIP as seen in some other defections and predicted by many, this is definitely not what is happening here. What is happening is a rise in Independent politics, following the recent votes in the PCC elections and nearby the Bristol mayoral result, and following Bath voting in its first Independent councillor at the last elections (who it seems Bryan has been on good terms with). It will be interesting to see what these councillors do at the next elections, and how the Tories fight those elections. It will also be interesting to see whether in 2013 this slow disintegration of the Tory group gathers any pace with others peeling away. As for the Independents, my impression is that they have been a group of mavericks who in reality have little to hold them together. However, Bryan Chalker is a much more experienced councillor, so it will be interesting to watch how that grouping acts.

Big defection in Buckinghamshire. Mohammad Bhatti, a Bucks County Councillor (since 2009) and Chiltern District Councillor (since 1999), who was given the MBE in the December 2011 New Year's Honours list, has left the Conservatives and joined Labour.

interesting move, I am guessing as a labour candidate he would have little chance of re-election, any word why ?

interesting move, I am guessing as a labour candidate he would have little chance of re-election, any word why ? His Bucks division (Chesham East) was a gain from Liberal Democrat last time, with Labour polling 4%. His ward in Chiltern (Newtown) had a reasonably large Conservative majority in 2011 but with a split opposition: Mohammad Zafir BHATTI (Conservatives) 480 Susan Waite JORDAN (Liberal Democrat) 210 Peter Lewis JONES (The Labour Party Candidate) 156 Nicholas John Eric WILKINS (The Green Party) 97 County councillors who defect in January of election year are normally the ones who have been deselected but I have no knowledge of whether that is so here.

What are the make ups of the respective councils? what goodies if any might be on offer from the Labour groups on them? and finally, is it possible that he is, or at least believes himself to be, the leader of the Bhatti party and electable under any label?

He's rather lonely as a Labour councillor on both authorities.

If the Tories were going to do bad here then god help them in other less favourable areas.
I would guess this is a de-selection row or does race have anything to do with it ?
