Strong support for the colour scheme there, Sibboleth. Anyway it was a very Third World - and New World at that - election, down from Bolsonaro's massive strength in the cities to Haddad's being dominant in Sertao. Which is ironic as Haddad is a Sampa city boy and Bolsonaro is a 'caipira' from the SP backwoods.

Bolsonaro meets with this chap: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edir_MacedoThis being the 'prosperity gospel' chap that I've mentioned in the past (I think greenchristian might have mentioned him too) This bloke's organisation is active in Britain, by the way.

And his mob are everywhere- I even found one of their churches in back street in Zurich in June.

Sorry but I don't think this map works half as well as yours usually, do, because I am finding it difficult to see the difference between two very dark and samey colours at the top end, and an awful lot of the country is pretty extreme one way or the other, or is that the point you want to make? I know which states are very dark red and which are very dark brown, but the point of the map surely is to convey that to the eye, and there I'm struggling to actually see it. Is the issue the similarity between the red and brown or the juxtaposition of very dark colours in general? It looks fine to me, but there can be differences between different screens. But I'll probably do 'voting for each candidate' maps as well - those will be clearer no matter.

When I made the comment it was a very gloomy day and I was looking on a rather poor screen - I have managed to get a rather better view since, though it still is a bit difficult to see the difference between very dark brown and very dark red - I'll look forward to the each candidate maps which may make the point I would like to see.

Obviously I get what you were getting at, but I for one find it quite hard to distinguish between certain shades of red and brown. (Brazilian fascism is blue-white-black, traditionally)

Ah...puts me in mind of A-Level Geography, with maps of the development of São Paulo. Happy times.

I'm sorry, I am hopelessly lost on these two new maps, fascinated but quite unable to make any sense of them at all. I just don't understand the two shapes and cannot make them fit any boundaries I can recognise, even looking at quite a detailed map of SP. Am I being very stupid? Where are we, exactly? Help, somebody, please!

Same for Rio.

Ah, Rio is a bit more recognisable! The bay certainly helps to get the scale, if you're a bit dim like me.
Also , the boundaries of the districts seem to relate to each other between the wider map and the more focused map of the electoral districts, and I still struggle with SP to make that work.
This is fascinating stuff- are you going to do any of the other metropolitan areas?
Do you know the socio-geographic mix of these areas well enough to know what's going on - like are the Haddad-voting areas favelas, say?
Are you working from detailed statistical sources-? I would love to know how certain smallish places voted where I have a particular interest and where I guess you are unlikely to come up with maps, like Lorena(SP) and Arapina (Pernambuco).

Um, from one point of view yes but you can't help feeling he's just trying to score an ideological point. If he provides replacement doctors to all those places which never had a resident doctor before, that'll be great but I'm not holding my breath.
