I like the idea of a political system where you’re only allowed to speak if you’re an expert on the subject. As long as I get to define “expert” of course (Of course, the “grievance studies” subjects have already implemented this, by taking Stand-point theory to an absurd level)

Everybody is allowed to have - and express - an opinion, but not all opinions are of equal value. It is the latter point that seems to sometimes be forgotten.

All opinions are equal, but some are more equal than others.

I'm sure that Red Rum knew more than mrhell about jumping Becher's Brook but I'm not about to tell him he can't use the Racing thread.

Now that this thread has relapsed into the forum's usual irreverent (irrelevant?) high spirits,-how did we get from Brazil to Red Rum, anyone?- I would like to come back to the point I tried to make earlier, maybe expressed badly , and so got misunderstood. I certainly was not wishing to suggest that a diversity of viewpoints was not welcome on this thread - I had just been taken aback that suddenly it was the issue of the moment when previously it had been an esoteric interest of a few Brazil hacks with a special interest in the country, but that really should not have surprised me, given the momentous nature of what was happening. And I do want to be able to discuss this with all manner of viewpoints- indeed the voice I really miss is the late lamented pieandmash, whose view on this election would be diametrically opposite to mine but who spoke with authority and depth of knowledge on the subject even if his conclusions were totally wrong-headed!
If I am posting on a topic where I have little knowledge- and yes indeed I do- I would normally try to ask questions rather than spout opinions. Even on Brazil I had to ask who the three Arab presidential candidates were as I wasn't sure of all 3, and I was answered. A lot of people are better read than me on a lot of topics, but I think I have more first-hand or at least close-quarter knowledge than some, maybe because I have been around for longer and travelled more widely than most.It is a different sort of knowledge, not necessarily better, but different from book-learning.
I am now in discussion with my younger son who I think is still intending to spend a family Christmas this year in the remote interior of Pernambuco state, and I know there are children there waiting for him to come in order for him to fulfill his duties as godfather. I think that whole area will be in mourning.

As far as I’m aware that did in fact happen. The boy’s family got a letter of apology from the school and the teacher was reprimanded. which school? I’m not sure of the name of the school but it was in Loughton in Essex I believe.

I agree, though given data protections and just plain data policies they, the school, might not be able to give out such information, even if they wanted to which I doubt.

If the guy has gone on national radio and talked about his close relative at some length to prove a political point, i think he's already run a coach and horses through his own privacy.

I’d agree but I meant the school. They might not be allowed to comfirm or deny that, or perhaps they’re too embarrassed to cop to it. If I employed someone who’d acted in such an outrageously partisan and censorious way I’d be.

Do you think they didn't try and find out more details? They aren't bothered by little details like data protection, and in any case they would just frame it as "we spoke to parents at blah blah school who confirmed that the incident had happened to a boy in Class 6" . Any school would find it difficult to keep this under their collective hat.
Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone had been stupid enough to do this. People do stupid things. Especially in education. But everything seems surprisingly vague.

I hope you’re right but I fear you’re not, especially give the way that alleged assistant teacher behaved at the Labour conference.

Reminds me of when my (incredibly scary) Year 7 geography teacher managed to convince a boy in my class that he had detention every day for a whole week for suggesting 'Never ever support West Brom' as a mnemonic for the compass points. He relented when the boy suggested Wolves instead.

I thought the talk around that was that he wasn't really a teacher at all..... didn't seem to have any employment as such. And certainly won't be getting any now I wouldn't have thought.
