I don’t have a prejudicial attitude against the Welsh language. I’m currently sitting in a pub with a Welsh name, in a village with a Welsh name. The beer is Welsh, but has an English name. But that doesn’t change the fact that when my train was announced at Cardiff Queen Street, the vast majority of people ignored the first announcement and waited for the useful announcement in English. And long may it continue. Gives me a headstart securing a seat. Leading Lib Dem ex-councillor admits to receiving preferential treatment on public transport.

When the train back to Cardiff pulled in, the English announcement didn’t start until the train was in the platform drowning out the announcement. Why bother. I then changed at Radyr for the City Line to Ninian Park. There it was even worse- the English announcement started after the doors had closed. And it’s not a long announcement as the train terminated at Central!

They haven't even finished one announcement before they get to Nantwich.

I don't know why train announcements are now designed as the start of a two-minute race to get on the bloody thing before it pulls out anyway, especially at a terminus when the sodding thing has been sat by the platform for 20 minutes beforehand. I suppose doing them in Welsh first adds to the fun; maybe for the rest of the country they could be in Latin or better yet Classical Greek. Sorry, this is about as far off-topic as possible, maybe I should start a Random Irritations thread.

I can manage in reading simple Welsh on a good day and I have a good Welsh dictionary at home if needs be. Don't ask me to speak any though, it's been a long time since my grandfather died. That isn't really the point though. How is (for example) your Finnish? Puhun vähän suomea. (Iain can sort any Welsh)

I would regard posting in anything other than the language which everyone speaks to be attention seeking, nothing more or less. I also carries the risk of being made to look a fool. I am always minded of the Irish Government which decreed that "Dear Sir" and "Yours faithfully" on all official letters had to be in Erse. One such letter was sent to an English ministry. They replied with "Dear Sir" and "Yours faithfully" in English, but the main text in Erse. The Irish had to ask for a translation. My mum worked in a government department where they received a letter in Welsh, from an address in North Wales, and sent it to the office in Wrexham for help. Wrexham sent it back. It wasn't in Welsh, it was just so appallingly spelled that it wasn't recognisable as English.

This discussion really should be on another thread. P.P.S. I fear that - like railways and beer - the Welsh language is never off-topic.

We did have a language thread at one point I'm sure. The multilingual would be the most overrepresented members of this site, were it not for Welsh speakers, real ale drinkers, Scots and supporters of surprising sport teams.

As I say, it was from North East Wales, so English was likely their second language after pseudo-Scouse.

As none of our settlements existed when that was an extant language they'd be mercifully short...

I wonder if the 26th July by-elections will be as interesting as the last three pages.

I know the Conservatives have issues with their candidate in Merthyr, but there is a possibility of them receiving an embarrassingly low number of votes
I assume that the vast majority on this forum would rather their party put a candidate in a ward where they are likely to get a derisory vote, than not to stand? Does anyone think its not worth it in order to avoid the embarrassment?

Always put a candidate up, it gives people an opportunity to vote for you if they wish, and they think you are at least trying for their vote, even on paper.
