I think the verification total was reported earlier to be 19,204. Are you sure those are the correct figures?

The Lib Dem candidate is supposed to be Nicholson, not Nicholas.

John I hope you're going to berate the BBC for their pathetic 'coverage' of these by-elections again - missing part of the decralation from Manchester and completely missing the one from Cardiff

That's not too bad a Conservative result, all things considered, although turnout might be a factor.

Disappointing turn out but hardly surprising. Several of the candidates worked really hard here for votes. Good to see the Plaid vote increasing, also UKIP should be happy with their vote.

John I hope you're going to berate the BBC for their pathetic 'coverage' of these by-elections again - missing part of the decralation from Manchester and completely missing the one from Cardiff The one thing which spoke loudly to me was the massive problem of using News 24 in the early hours as a catch-all channel for a world and domestic audience. Before and during the declarations, the broadcast was part of either BBC World or BBC America. ("This is BBC News broadcasting on public service channels from London across the world"). Now that the age of dedicated by-election programmes has passed into the archives, this is going to be the way all future votes will be covered. It's not good or right - I swore quite loudly, as I have laptop at the moment so had to rely on the television and television alone.

Bit swings and roundabouts for Plaid and the Lib Dems. In 2011 PC knocked the Lib Dems into 4th. That was undone yesterday. So the result is between the GE for Westminster and that for Cardiff Bay.

I woke my wife up by shouting at the tv and in turn got shouted at myself

Lab +8.4 Con -8.4 LD - 11.5 PC + 5.3 UKIP +3.5 Grn +2.9 Even I can work out that swing It's the kind of result that everyone can take something from, but nobody will be absolutely delighted with. Strong Labour hold, could have been worse for Con and LD, Plaid up but would surely have been hoping for 3rd. UKIP save their deposit and Greens get a decent increase (I am slightly surprised we did better here than in Manchester).

Again, it could have been worse. The swing was slightly smaller than that of Feltham and Heston last year.

Yes, I would agree it was a bit of a "meh" result for us and decent for the Tories. LibDems the main losers - again

I think a fairly 'meh' swing is appropriate for what has always been more of a 'meh' Labour seat than a towering majority type.
