www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-42413696According to the Beeb, Neil Hamilton has said the if Jack Sargeant wins the Labour nomination, UKIP won't field a candidate "out of respect to the late Carl Sargeant". Methinks they're hurting for funds and can barely afford to proffer up the £500 electoral deposit...

Not sure if this is a good thing or not - TBH he is too young and inexperienced - but if Labour dont select him and he chooses to stand as an independent then this could get very messy. I’d say Labour definitely won’t select him. Potential for a shitshow, this situation is. He has made the shortlist which means he will have been through the usual by election vetting so he can't have been incompetent in the interview. It's now entirely up to the Alyn and Deeside party.

Its certainly not unknown for relatives to succeed or try to succeed an MP. Janey Buchan, Helen McElhone, Tamsin Dunwoody and in the current PLP Gill Furniss. The suicide of his father is clearly an unusual and sad situation but he does appear to have been a popular and locally rooted Member and perhaps he does feel that he wants to fulfil a legacy from a life taken too soon. Anyway let's leave it up to the local party.

At the moment I have heard nothing about why he would be a good candidate choice other than that he is the son of the late AM. I hope for his sake that isn't all there is.
Incidentally Janey Buchan didn't succeed Norman Buchan - and his seat in Paisley South wasn't in the Glasgow European Parliament seat. Perhaps you're confusing him with Irene Adams succeeding Allen Adams in Paisley North?

Thanks for the correction.....of course it's not only on our side either that sons and daughters seek seats and sometimes like Ben Gummer or Robin Walker they are the same or adjacent to the seats held by tbeir parents I hope that the interview process wasn't relaxed in his case.

I assume the Conservatives will get some sort of boost here owing to UKIP's collapse.

I assume the Conservatives will get some sort of boost here owing to UKIP's collapse. I thought we established at the recent General Election that the former UKIP vote hasn't always fallen unanimously towards the Conservatives? (And UKIP's collapse certainly did little to benefit the Tories here, last June)

A tiny bit, perhaps, maybe, but certainly not enough to make any appreciable difference (reminder: Alyn and Deeside saw a swing to Labour at the last General, in spite of UKIP's collapse). From the outside, I also find it unlikely that EU matters are going be a significant factor in this contest anyway.

Depends if UKIP stand.
Weren’t they considering not running if Carl Sargeant’s son is the Labour candidate?

Damn it you sussed out the plan within five minutes. Isn't there an "r" in Darlek? Otherwise it just sounds like a dish from the subcontinent? Pronouncing Dalek as if there were an 'r' in it – as my aunt does – can be an amusing affectation. Spelling it with one, on the other hand, is just plain ignorant and moronic. Incidentally 'dàlek' is a Serbo-Croat word meaning 'far' or 'distant', but Terry Nation has always claimed that he had no idea of this when he came up with the name for the race. It's not as if he could've just Googled it back in the 1960s!
