Having just watched the report on the BBC News, I find myself thinking of the circumstances that caused the Paisley South by-election of 1997 (i.e rumours against a sitting member of an elected parliament) which led to the suspension of another elected official.

As there were no boundary changes in Alyn and Deeside in 2007 those tallies do not have to adjusted and makes me think that the main opposition to Labour is in fact the Lib Dems (as the Conservative vote seems remarkably static) |

The Conservatives got 40% in the Westminster seat in June so I'd be surprised if they couldn't get some increase.
Should be a straightforward Labour hold.
The Conservatives never won here unlike in Delyn in the 80s.

February would be appropriate, otherwise campaigning could potentially overlap within the week either side of his funeral. I would just point out that Gwyneth Dunwoody's funeral took place during the byelection campaign. Campaigning was suspended for the day. |

The funeral has taken place, emotions in Cardiff Bay and in Labour are still high and there are still lots of unanswered questions.
I'd expect the by-election to be formally called this week or at the very latest next week, which is the last sitting week before Christmas.
Here's some speculation on the Labour candidate:
Bernie Attridge is the deputy leader of Flintshire Council and described Carl as his best friend. He's publicly called for Carwyn to quit as FM, and has also questioned his own future in the Labour party as a result of the what's happened over the last few weeks.

I sincerely hope that Welsh Labour will have the sense to shortlist the candidates the local party want. And to accept the fact that Carwyn Jones should stand down.
