Thanks Mark that's very interesting. How many students are there in Worthing? Our stereotypical notions of Worthing aren't of a very youth-influenced town. I shall watch the result with interest. Re Penshurst I have only been once. We had a gig in a marquee for a girl's 18th birthday. It was very upper-crust & the girl was called Arabella. The stereotype impression of Worthing is of a place dominated by old people and retirement homes but in recent years the town centre wards have become more and more dominated by students some overflow from Brighton but rather more from the local Northbrook College . Marine ward however is much much more larger single dwellings very much Conservative heartland . Had to stroll through the ward this morning to Drs for a repeat prescription . Passed one of the polling stations on the way , tellers from Con / Lab and Lib Dem nut no Greens , 2 or 3 voters in the couple of minutes I was there . No posters or stakeboards apart from the 1 Lib Dem previously mentioned .

Its also been claimed that Worthing is now seeing some more general migration from Gtr London (rather as Brighton has done)

A note on the Worthing Marine by election today . This ward is next door to the one in which I live indeed the boundary runs down my road and the opposite side of Grand Avenue is in Marine ward . Labour have fielded their GE candidate Rebecca Cooper and have put in more effort than all the other parties together . Last Saturday they were out in force at the local parade of shops and I had a brief chat with the Labour candidate , a pleasant enough young woman who would probably make a decent councillor . Labour seem to have convinced themselves they can win this by election on the back of a good show at the G E . There are certainly wards that are now winnable for Labour in Worthing if the student vote turns out but Marine is not one of them so I expect Labour will get a decent result but be disappointed in it themselves . Strangely the only stakeboard/poster I have seen is a Lib Dem which is one more than seen for all parties at the recent GE . If the Fallowfield turn-out is a guide, then students will not be voting at this time of year, cause they have returned home, so if Labour are hoping the youth vote will push them over the line they are likely to be disappointed.

As I have stated , there are very few students in this particular ward .

'Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man'.............................Sigh!! I had a copy of those memoirs in my collection of great first world war books (much better in the war bits than the fox-hunting bits imo)- a collection including Goodbye to All That and All Quiet on the Western Front. They were all lost in my house fire in 1997 which took over 1000 volumes- the house was replaced by Seeboard whose mains cable was responsible, but the library was irreplaceable. Of course if you are nostalgic for the days of feudalism in deeply rural Kent you would expect the Steetfeilds of Chiddingstone Castle to come out on top, and Richard Streetfeild the current head of the Streetfeild family (I have to resist the temptation to miscorrect that spelling) is indeed the Lib Dem candidate again. You're "lucky" it happened then and not now. You would likely be fighting the Chinese company who owns them for years.

I have had a Twitter report that Labour have gained Worthing, Marine. That would be stunning. They were bigging up their canvass returns, but that was to be expected.

The Marine ward of Worthing has never been Labour-held. In fact, this ward of Worthing has continuously elected Conservative councillors since its creation in 1973.
