A Conservative has been returned unopposed in the Richmondshire, Reeth & Arkengarthdale by-election scheduled for 18 May. Previous Councillor was Independent. A bit of a contrast with the previous by-election here, then. |

I think the deadline for calling a local byelection on 8 June is Wednesday 3 May.

That is correct, David, due to the minimum eight day period needed to release the relevant notices in a timely manner before the nomination deadline.

Canterbury City Council, Westgate Ward, June 8th. Conservative Cllr John Brazier (son of local MP) has resigned. Two member ward with other seat held by Lib Dems. Brazier only beat the second Lib Dem candidate by a handful of votes in 2015.

could be an interesting by-election. Resignation timed to coincide with GE as that was the only likely circumstance for a Con hold,maybe?

City of York UA it has just been announced on the York Press website that Labour councillor David Levene (Hull Road ward) has resigned and that the by-election for this seat will be on June 8th , amazing how quick they can call this by-election so quick when they are still waiting to confirm the date of the Micklegate by-election which was first flagged back in March, does anyone know if Julie Gunnell has actually resigned yet ?

There are currently 30 known vacancies that will be contested after 4 May, including 2 seats in one ward. There are 13 contests for 14 seats already called for June 8 but most if not all the other 12 where a date is awaited are also expected to be held on the same date as the General Election. In addition there are now 3 deferred elections following the death of a candidate for the 4 May elections.

Both Ashford seats would be pretty unpredictable on any other day but if they are held on GE day must be safe Tory holds, even though neither are natural Tory territory. I don't think any other party in present circumstances is ready to launch any sort of challenge and the wards are probably only Tory by default from last time. I posted my comments on the late Cllr Harold Apps when that news came through - when it comes to Cllr Luke Powell I can only say *who?"

Avonmore and Brook Green, vice Hannah Barlow (Labour)
Sands End, vice Robert Largan (Conservative).
Both polling on 8 June.

We only won it once (in 2008) It was more the swing "back" that intrigued me... The 2012 election was 70.4% Labour, 8.2% LD.. quite a fall from grace.. Bit late to this...but it is indeed very curious. I suspect it'll be an easy Labour hold. |

I can't remember exactly what the circumstances of that defection were ( listener ?) but something half-remembered in the back of my mind suggests to me that it wasn't pretty. |
