Today is the 28th anniversary of the by-elections in Richmond (Yorkshire) and Pontypridd. The level of acrimony between the Lib Dems and the continuing SDP was far more intense than any recent factional convulsions within UKIP or Corbyn's Labour.

Why is Paul Nuttall's name in blue? Is that what you expect him to be?

Though to be honest, I'd rather read about The Incredible Flying Brick. He became the Shadow Minister for the Abolition of Gravity after he had an argument with gravity and lost (while he was doing his hobby of hang-gliding).

Nearly five hours until polls close and there's already 43 people viewing this subforum. This is going to be fun.

Can anyone recall this level of excitement in the Uxbridge, Beckenham and Eddisbury by-elections during Blair's first term? The national polls were suggesting Labour would pick up all three, after all.

Was Eddisbury tipped as a Labour pick up?

I don't recall that. Looking back, the Blair honeymoon lasted ages.

The national polls were suggesting Labour would pick up all three, after all. And that of course, was Mike SMithson's point regarding the fact that the National Polls point to at the very least a TOry win in Copeland, but as those by-elections showed, national polling figures dont always translate into by-election success (or failure).

I feel confident in predicting that there will either be a speech declaring that this is the public fighting back against cuts to our NHS and not giving the government a free hand on Brexit or a speech declaring that the public has the utmost confidence in the government over the NHS and Brexit.

What are the odds on one of the fringe candidates eating a pie while the declaration is read out?

What if Barbara Fielding wins? Donald Trump makes her his new ambassador to Britain?
