I wonder if she will try to appeal? The report also says that she represented herself throughout the process. I wonder what the outcome would have been if she had allowed herself to be advised by, and represented by, a proper barrister . They might even have tried to argue that she was not guilty on grounds of insanity. I wonder how much the judge would make allowances for the fact that she did not allow herself to be given proper legal advice. It's an unduly harsh sentence in my opinion. I agree that she should have been jailed, despite being a 79 year old woman, because they are serious offences, but it should have been more like 3 to 6 months, not 12. She’ll probably be out in three months or dead?

Effectively, that means very little in terms of how much time a person serves in prison.

The report I read (and I think linked earlier) seemed pretty clear that she would serve six months in prison and six months on licence. I’m by no means a legal scholar but it doesn’t sound at all like she’ll be out with a tag in a few weeks, but I prepare to stand corrected (well, sit corrected as I haven’t actually stood since hitting the school physiotherapist with an elbow crutch when I was 13 😁).

As someone with some expertise in the area, I think you may find things slightly less clear-cut. A six month prison sentence is not associated to the end of the licence; as she is serving a set sentence of under 10 years, she would usually serve half her sentence, and, if she is seen as being no real threat in the community, would get a tag before that. The only caveat is that she has a very short time-scale in which Offender Management has to sort it out. The Licence period will end at the same time, whenever she is released.

There's not much pensioner-suitable accommodation in the male estate. Presumably that's even more the case in women's prisons?

Well, that isn't really the issue as there are quite a number of pensioners in the prisons now, not least with historical abuse cases. The Women's Estate is probably less pressurised proportionally than the male, but she is not exactly somebody they'd feel the need to keep locked up if they could find another way.
