Only been to Stoke Central once, in the early 1980s as a guest of the Potteries Lesbian and Gay Youth Group who hosted a Weekend Workshop for various UK local LGBT youth groups... shortly after the LGB centre that hosted the event was demolished (as were two gay pubs) to make way for a road improvement scheme, some how I never had any reason to go back..... Yeah I know what you mean.. what's the point of visiting anywhere unless it's hosting an LGBT workshop? I'd normally agree. But to be fair, this is Stoke. The best reason to go are the oatcakes.

I used to work in Stoke quite frequently, especially Old Stoke, Hanley and Shelton. It's a sad place isn't it? But some beautiful architecture and some of the friendliest people of any town I know.

I have been in the Glebe and the White Star many times. Not done many other pubs in Stoke. Last time I was in the area, we did a pub crawl of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Which was weird. A bit off topic to say the least, but have you been in the Hatfield Arms opposite Hatfield station? (seems to go by the name The Great Northern these days) No. Not sure I've ever been to Hatfield other than when driving.

Why do people think the Lib Dems will do well here given the large leave vote and terrible starting position. A council by-election in Sunderland yesterday where the Libs won from fourth I suspect is the big reason for the high expectations . Prior to the 2015 debacle, Lib Dems got good results here - look it up! The results show that there is a good Lib Dem base.

Intresting who will get the momentum for 2nd place. Basically, because of yesterday's result in Sunderland. Which if nothing else ignores that parliamentary by-elections have a different dynamic from local council ones.

Every few years the existence of local by-elections is suddenly Revealed to a lot of people who follow politics but know little of elections. And they always grossly over interpret them. And then they forget them again. We're on the early part of the cycle right now. It's embarrassing.

Tory gain. Lab 2nd. Ld's third. Ukip 4th. A tasty double with the Tories gaining Copeland...pile in ;-) I'll stick my neck out now and say - NOT HAPPENING. (not even UKIP coming 4th, I strongly suspect)

Labour may be better off without an MP who believes it is OK to cross an authorised picket. I hold him in contempt for that. I've been a union member since the day I started work. I've picketed and I've never crossed a picket line (and I doubt I ever will): if people want to, that's up to them, but it is preposterous for a Labour MP to do so, whether they are union members or not. Hunt is a disgrace to his party.

We've been gambled down from 50/1 to 7/1 which is surprising.

By 'here', are you referring to the ward in Sunderland that you won yesterday or to Stoke on Trent, because if the latter not really (and not really the former either AFAICT)

Hunt is a disgrace to his party. That is disappointing Neil and so very 1970s and so un-conservative. I like Hunt a lot because he had a life and interests outside politics and none of that sort of tribal nonsense about him. I too was a near life-long union member, on committees and briefly a convenor for an area. I took it seriously but never 'Union right or wrong'. I was never faced with a 'do I stick with my personal code and principles or always remain in solidarity with the Union?'. It came close twice but never to the point. I would have stayed personal and denied the Union. But then I am not a dyed in the wool tribal nor working class on either side for generations....so possibly easier for me.

The population wsa 85% white in 2011 but of course when it comes to those who actually bother to vote the percentage is probably still above 90%. Is working class Asian turnout lower than white working class turnout? I always got the impression it was a bit higher, but I suppose it can vary widely from community to community. I was mainly thinking in terms of higher turnout amongst older people which probably means a higher white proportion of voters than the census figures would indicate.

Joules' stuff is excellent. You can tell they've got decent water in the Potteries.

Stoke is the largest city in Britain I have yet to visit. Looks like a good opportunity to change that.

Quite happy to have a pint or two in passing, but wouldn't want a Joule's pub as my local, unless they had regularly changing guest beers- their pubs I have visited did not, just their own regulars.
