Goodness me-even by the standards of local by-elections, a 40.15% swing between any two parties or candidates is normally unheard of. I wonder what the issues there were...

As already mentioned, its a worse result for UKIP than last year. Yes, and push Cons into 3rd, not 2nd... What I'm trying to say is that it's not a terribly encouraging result for them on that strategy - they might replace Cons as rivals to Labour, but nothing here to really worry Labour that I can see. No surprise, to be be honest; only Labour campaigned in the ward and the strong Scots contingent in the ward are, unlike in their homeland, solidly Labour. Also, a lot of older Irish and recent Polish voters who are not enamored with UKIP.

That leaves just the two Teignbridge contests, which I presume may be counted tomorrow?

Stunning results for Lib Dems in Brexit-voting West Country, it seems!

They went to the trouble of counting the votes to five decimal places? How precise!

They went to the trouble of counting the votes to five decimal places? How precise! Not needed in the case of single-member byelections, but might be important in multi-member elections. Although I think Ireland tends to recount if anything comes down to fractions of a vote.

Chudleigh, Teignbridge LD 680 (51.5%; +38.7) Con 470 (35.6%; +2.8) UKIP 89 (6.7%) Lab 81 (6.1%; -8.9) Possibly our best result in a ward sounding like a P G Wodehouse butler. Hoping for a matching result in Bovey Tracey, to make that our best result in a ward sounding like a character from Emmerdale.

I believe my cousin and her husband live in Chudleigh. Not sure if she voted, particularly as there was no Green candidate. My grandfather lives about 3km too far north-west to be in Blackdown ward.

Although I think Ireland tends to recount if anything comes down to fractions of a vote. Northern Ireland goes to two decimal places, while the South rounds off to the nearest integer (with the exception of elections to the vocational panels of the Senate, which treat each ballot paper as representing 1,000 votes and thereby effectively allow three decimal places to be considered).
