Argos. Soviet shopping at its best. Queue for a fucking token, queue to pay and then queue to collect. it is a curiously 70s system, but then it was invented by the man who brought Green Shield stamps to the UK...(he'd just been on holiday in Argos) And you're being a little bit unfair - Unlike in the Soviet system at least in Argos you get something after all that queuing.. I went to Argos in Bicester last week to pick up my nieces' Christmas presents. Would've rather the results from a Soviet shop- instead I had to walk down Sheep Street with some very large pink toys. FFS. And I don't mean the railway in Ticino, sadly.

It looks like Barrow and his team have already taken over, despite his term not starting until January. Jammeh's whereabouts are unknown at the moment, after his tv transmitted statement Friday where he joked about returning to his village and becoming a farmer.
The release of all political prisoners (incl. the UDP leaders jailed in April) has top priority for the new administration and is expected to happen next week. Barrow's transition team has sought UN assistance and say they expect the UN to play a key role in smoothing the transition.
They aim to establish a South African style truth and reconciliation commission, and it doesn't look like Jammeh will face prosecution. Agents from his National Intelligence Agency, which reports directly to Jammeh, have committed rape, torture and numerous executions and the question is if the victims and their families will accept they go unpunished.

Barrow has picked Gambia's most prominent left wing leader Halifa Sallah as his VP. Sallah is chairman of the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) and publisher of their newspaper Foroyaa, which is one the best papers in Gambia. Interesting choice, but a good supplement to "Businessman Barrow".

The new Gambian leader has British connections, oh yes. "Born in 1965 near the eastern market town of Basse, Mr Barrow moved to London in the 2000s where he reportedly used to work as a security guard at an Argos catalogue store."Of course Gambia's first president Dawda Jawara also had British connections having trained as a Vet in Glasgow and Liverpool. As far as I'm aware Dawda is still the only Vet ever to be become a head of State or Government. (One for the trivia thread)

These sorts of threads are why I love this forum. Excellent suggestions both :-) Dawda can hang on to his title as the only Veterinary Surgeon to be a Head of State but not as Head of Government.

"An appeals court in Gambia has ordered the release of a top opposition politician and 18 others who were arrested after they took part in a peaceful protest earlier this year calling for political reforms. (...) Appeals court president Justice A.O. Adogoke said on Monday that the prisoners would be granted bail but must have someone vouch for them and they must hand over their passports. The 19 people now facing release stood up in the courtroom and sang the national anthem along with their lawyers and supporters."

This week I took the opportunity to inform my team that Salisbury staff discount is up to 15% and that they may now also claim it at Argos. And that one of our former colleagues had been elected as president of Gambia. You've moved a long way south from where you used to live, then?

Jammeh has rejected the election result in a televised address to the people of Gambia and called for a re-run, but it remains unclear what he will do about the handover of power (and how far it has already progressed). The transition period end in late January, but the date is as yet unspecified. Looks like he wants a new pro-regime EC: "I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a god-fearing and independent electoral commission." www.reuters.com/article/us-gambia-election-idUSKBN13Y2QO?il=0

Jammeh might have negotiated with the top brass after the "disappeared" and made a deal about continued support. The role of the Army is the big mystery in all this. I assumed he stepped down because the generals refused to support him, but maybe media talk about legal consequences for crimes committed during the regime (despite the "peace and reconciliation" route chosen by Barrow and his team) has caused a change of heart among leading officers. But its far from given the generals are united about this.

Jammeh and APRC will contest the election result in court. "Jammeh’s declaration was “a prelude to a petition that the (ruling) APRC Party is in the process of filing before the Supreme Court of the Gambia against a fraud decision of the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission),” his party said in a statement released late Saturday." guardian.ng/news/gambias-jammeh-to-contest-election-result-in-court/There is reportedly growing pressure on Nigerian president Buhari for Nigeria (through ECOWAS) to force Jammeh out if he refuses to step down.
