Lenín Moreno, incidentally, is a wheelchair user. He was shot during a robbery in 1998 and left paralysed.

Nice to see that Lenin has accepted the democratic system.

Some interest for UK people in this, as Guillermo Lasso has promised that if he wins, he'll give Julian Assange 30 days to quit the London embassy.
Ecuador bans opinion polls in the period immediately before an election so the last ones were published yesterday, and had Lenin Moreno (PAIS Alliance - the left-wing nationalist party of incumbent President Correa) in a comfortable lead.

I shall be in Ecuador on the 19th February and will watch with interest, although my Spanish isn't really up to the job these days.
From a parochial point of view it's almost enough to get me to support Lasso if he gets rid of that weasel Assange. Correa did a good job as president, and I don't doubt Moreno will lead on first ballot, and win overall.

Correa did a good job as president, and I don't doubt Moreno will lead on first ballot, and win overall. Made the same mistakes as Morales and Chavez though - spending commodity revenue on social welfare without investing in sustainable development. Commodity prices collapsing brings the entire system down.

So is Assange going to surrender himself to the Americans as he says, or to the country that actually does want to investigate him?

General agreement that the runoff will be Lenin Moreno v Guillermo Lasso: But third place is Cynthia Viteri with 14-15%, and her supporters would be more likely to transfer to Lasso.

As Correra said: Another strong triumph of the Ecuadorian people! Congrats Lenin! Is he calling the 57% or so of people who didn't vote for his candidate non-Ecuadorians? Or 'enemies of the people', perhaps? That sounds like a dangerous road to go down. If he means it's a triumph of the people because citizens have taken part in an open, free and fair democratic exercise, then of course that's fine, but somehow I doubt that was his intention. It's 'Len ín' anyway.

With 51.8 percent of ballots counted its 38.26% to Moreno vs. 29.86% for Lasso, so its going to be close. Right now there will be a run-off, but likely not in the end.
(apologies for earlier trolling)

The CNE page is unreliable, but their last count has 38.66% to 28.92% with 72.3% counted. El Comerico is updating frequently and Miami Herald correspondent Jim Wyss is following the count on his twitter: twitter.com/jimwyss?lang=da

The lack of a run-off would not be a triumph for Swedish rape survivors who would like to see a certain egomaniacal Australian coward put on trial.
