I believe a rape is a group of hundreds, rather like a wapentake - but a rape is southern, particularly Sussex. I shall no doubt be corrected by Adam! Don't bet on it. East Anglian Lefty may be sharper. But as far as I remember the Sussex rape and Kentish lathe are, like the wapentake, alternative names for the hundred, not groups of them. Wapentakes are in Danelaw shires: Hundreds in West Saxon/Mercian ones. Kent and Sussex were apparently just a bit localist and stuck to their own divisions. That's an I understand it. Wapentake is from Old Norse - literally a taking-up of weapons, sometimes explained as people collecting their weapons after the conclusion of an assembly, though this may be a folk etymology. I can't recall what the roots of rape and lathe are, or if there's even any consensus. A hundred is variously explained as an area occupied by 100 families (unlikely, Anglo-Saxon society not being that clannish) or as an area containing 100 hides (a measurement of land, though probably of takes levied on it rather than extent) or as a cognate to the Danish sub-unit known as a herred (I think härad in Swedish, perhaps?)

Since only about 20% of the total Guildford electorate have voted for a leader, will the town now be subjected to calls for repeat referendums until it gives the answer certain people want?

Amusingly, the vote for a Mayor was lower than the number of signatures received to prompt the referendum.

Amusingly, the vote for a Mayor was lower than the number of signatures received to prompt the referendum. Not a surprise given the story about how the signatures for the petition were obtained.

"Pwyll Prince of Dyved was the lord of the seven cantrevs of Dyved" First line of the Mabinogion. NO! First line is 'Pwyll Pendefig Dyfed a oedd yn arglwydd ar seith cantref Dyfed' Nice to see the original Welsh, which I wouldn't have known. Lovely sounding stuff even in my very bad attempt to pronounce it out loud. However, in the true spirit of pedantry for which we are renowned on this board, I can't forbear to point out that the name "The Mabinogion" was coined by 18th century English translators due to a misunderstanding, and popularised by Lady Caroline Guest, when she made the translation which I quoted. So strictly speaking, "The Mabinogion" is the translation into English and the first line is as I gave, whereas presumably what you have quoted is the first line of either Llyfr Gwyn Rhydderch, or Llyfr Goch Hergest.
