Like most hangovers from ancient local government they ceased to have any administrative function by the end of the 19th century.

But they still exist like Wapentakes? Strange how endurable some local names are!

But they still exist like Wapentakes? Strange how endurable some local names are! They 'still exist' in the sense that it's possible to trace where their boundaries are. But as nothing at all turns on which hundred, or lathe, or rape, or wapentake you are in, this existence is on a fairly theoretical plane.

I believe a rape is a group of hundreds, rather like a wapentake - but a rape is southern, particularly Sussex. I shall no doubt be corrected by Adam! Don't bet on it. East Anglian Lefty may be sharper. But as far as I remember the Sussex rape and Kentish lathe are, like the wapentake, alternative names for the hundred, not groups of them. Wapentakes are in Danelaw shires: Hundreds in West Saxon/Mercian ones. Kent and Sussex were apparently just a bit localist and stuck to their own divisions.

Fair enough, but it would be nice to see some old terms being used again, more interesting than "Unitary Authority" or "District" I think.

When Ceredigion became unitary in 1995, there were two votes taken on day one. The first vote was to change the name from Cardiganshire to Ceredigion and the second vote was to call themselves COUNTY

Interesting, did any others change their names? Gwynedd was originally to be called Caernarfonshire & Merionethshire. More accurate in many respects but a mouthful.

Cantrefi covered much smaller swathes of territory than counties; closer to hundreds really.
