Mosborough views itself as a separate town as well. Which is why is was such a blinding own goal. You'd think a "we're our own town, we don't like Sheffield imposing their will on us" Stocksbridge local would have realised the consequences of going up against exactly the same attitude in Mosborough. Sheffield is interesting like that. When I first moved there, I spent a day exploring by tram (for general geography if nothing else). There is actually a roadsign for 'Mosborough and Townships' which struck me as very South African. I used to drink in Chapeltown and eat at the Acorn in Burncross- both places rejected Sheffield with one person saying to me that Chapeltown was it's own place as it had town in the name and had a railway station!

The "Mosborough Townships" was what the council called the area when the development was being planned in the 1970s. (There's a webpage with something about the plans at www.haydnvernals.co.uk/roads/mostown.htm ) I don't know why they used "township" for the individual communities; when did the word acquire its South African connotations?

I imagine when the events in Soweto were getting on the news over here so late 70s/early 80s?
