For the discussion of psephological cartography, and for connected purposes.Someone go get Andrew Teale. For my part I've just taken delivery of the Illustrated London News map of the 1885 election, which no doubt you're all thrilled to learn. It goes with my 1886 one, and when I get time I'll scan them both in.

You rang? South Yorkshire maps are on the Atlas forum. That series is finished so here's a new series for Tyne and Wear. Gateshead 2011. Changes based on 2007: Lab gain from LD Crawcrook and Greenside Dunston Hill and Whickham East Pelaw and Heworth Ryton, Crookhill and Stella Winlaton and High Spen 2010 map: 2011 map: Cartogram of the 2011 results (showing each ward according to its voting power): Split wards are (not taking account of by-elections or defections): Birtley is 2Lab/1Lib and the Liberals are defending in May. Crawcrook and Greenside is 2Lab/1LD and the Lib Dems are defending in May. Dunston Hill and Whickham East is 2Lab/1LD and the Lib Dems are defending in May. Pelaw and Heworth is 2Lab/1LD and the Lib Dems are defending in May. Ryton, Crookhill and Stella is 2LD/1Lab and the Lib Dems are defending in May. Winlaton and High Spen is 2Lab/1LD and the Lib Dems are defending in May. Few things to note: - before 2010 Gateshead really was a council where nothing happened electorally. After the 2008 elections all the wards had a full slate of Labour councillors or a full slate of Lib Dem councillors (except Birtley which had one Liberal Party councillor). - the Lib Dems normally don't stand in Birtley and Lamesley to give the continuing Liberals a run. - it could have been even worse for the Lib Dems this year as they held Whickham North by just 24 votes.

Ah, but can anyone do 3D maps? I can (as seen on the Ceredigion forum) but I cannot find the attachment thing, does it only work on posts were you are the person who created the section (as I wanted to post a series of 3D majority maps for North Warwickshire 2003 - 2011

Harry, I'd love you see a 3D map of Preston, they look really good! How do you do them? 1) Download Google Earth 2) Visit mapit.mysociety.org/ and type in a postcode of the area that you want to map 3) Find the council that you want to map 4) Select "Children" 5) Click on each ward 6) Open Google Earth 7) Click on KML and open the file. The ward map will instantly appear in Google Earth 8) When all wards are open in Google Earth, assign them to a folder and share style (Outlined with a thickness of 3) 9) Access the local election data that you want to map 10) Change the colouring to Filled, choose the colour that you want and then go to Altitude and increase in proportion (I use a scale of 1m in height equals 0.01%) For an example please see my Ceredigion map and I will now create a Preston map for 2011 (Source: Andrew Teale)

(Byker was a postponed poll, Westerhope was an abandoned poll): Why abandoned? The Lib Dem candidate died on polling day, after the polls had opened.

My apologies, I thought that you were referring to the My Society site. I am not aware of relief maps being available on Google Earth. If you look at the Preston and Ceredigion threads, you will see the type of 3D map I am referring to

I must have lost track of what people were talking about because I obviously misunderstood what you meant by 3D. When the Croydon ward boundaries were being re-drawn in c.2000, I made a coloured-pencil relief map of Croydon showing the height above sea-level in various shades of green, yellow & brown. It was helpful in showing additional information about where there were connections and physical barriers (hills etc). I am annoyed with myself because I was looking for it a while ago and couldn't find it again in my papers and files. Presumably it's much easier now with computery internety things to make a relief map of Croydon which could show hills and ward boundaries etc at the same time.

Thats really cool. The M10 is no longer the M10 of course
I'm reminded I had created a pretty map just before the old site went down - must dig it up

That is a very pretty map! I do love Tube style ones. As it's a 2008 edition, it's missing the M74 extension and the M80 link that were completed last year (though to be fair Google Maps took six months to find out they existed too).
Oddly, the junction names aren't the ones commonly used on travel reports. Favourites such as Helen Street, Raith Interchange and Admiralty are all sadly missing. It's almost as if the Boundary Commission have been here...
