I will be surprised if Labour don't pick a woman candidate. They are currently sat with 99 female MPs and were about to announce the winner of last weeks Tooting by election as the 100th Labour woman MP before tragic events earlier that day overtook them. Personally I am against all women short lists but in this case it would be appropriate.

Personally I am against all women short lists but in this case it would be appropriate. It was an all-women short list in 2015. Well, it was a short list of 2, the other woman being Alison Lowe, which is quite on the left-wing of the party (councillor in Leeds, but she lives in Birstall). If not an all-woman shortlist, 2014 news articles implied the heavy favourite would have been Shabir Pandor, a councillor for Batley and new Labour leader in Kirklees, but one must assume the recent events of the last Council annual meeting may dampen his chances (some Labour councillors got "sick", so he failed to be elected and there was allegations the putch on Labour leadership was racially motivated). Council is run by the Chief Executive until a Leader is elected and there is no Cabinet.

Now, a valid nomination being lodged only with 1% of the electorate in a constituency, now that would be a better method (and in this case mean that what the parties at Westminster want to happen, would happen) Apparently, this was the method adopted by Trumpton Town Council to great success in the popular 1960s television series.

In his interview with the BBC yesterday, Brendan Cox ruled himself out of the selection.

In his interview with the BBC yesterday, Brendan Cox ruled himself out of the selection. A wise move, given the circumstances of his leaving Save The Children.

I dont think its cheap, but I do think innocent until proven guilty. It would be nice if Labour selected someone from a private sector background rather than another charity non-jobber.

His wife was cruelly and viciously murdered less than a week ago and he is grief stricken. Of course it was a cheap, and uncharacteristic.

Can I ask, how is the Labour candidate going to be selected for this seat? What will be the process?

If uncontested (at least by the other main parties) could Labour use the opportunity to return one of its lost 'stars' from the last election, say Douglas Alexander, Ed Balls or maybe even David Miliband? There is a no confidence motion in their current leader after all. Short term criticism for long term gain?
