In Milan this weekend, I have noticed that there are local elections in Italy in a week's time.
Has anyone got the background to these elections?

Apparently there are local elections in some parts of Italy around this time every year. I can't see any pattern as to which regions and cities vote in which year, but at least they don't elect in halves or thirds. The World Election site (maintained by a member of this forum before he became obsessed with Colombia and kept complaining that nobody was listening to him) had a post on last year's locals. According to Wikipedia, Bozen voted a week earlier than the other cities and the result was a centre-left gain from an independent mayor.

There are two rounds: the first on 5th June, the second on 19th June.
If we look at the opinion polls, The Democratic Party's huge lead a year ago has gradually eroded and they are now only a few points ahead of the Five Star Movement. Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia is still in dire straits, flatlining in fourth place at about 10-12% just under Lega Nord/Us with Salvini.

Rome is the most interesting one because it could mean a real breakthrough for M5S and their candidate is a potential future party leader. Its also a "dress rehearsal" of sorts for the constitutional referendum. Profile of youngish lawyer Virginia Raggi (37) from M5S, who is tied with Roberto Giachetti from PD for Mayor of Rome. Major boost for M5S if she can take it, and a humiliation of PD. www.theguardian.com/world/2016/mar/23/corruption-garbage-top-agenda-rome-mayor-raggi-five-star-movementThe former PD Mayor Ignazio Marino was forced to resign ten months ago over an expense scandal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_municipal_election,_2016"The next Italian elections will take place in June, when voters will be called to renew 1,351 city mayors and municipal councils. Among them are Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna and Turin. This is a crucial test for the government and for the prime minister and secretary of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi. It also comes just a few months before the referendum on constitutional reforms, already announced for October, on which Renzi has staked his political career." www.italy24.ilsole24ore.com/art/politics/2016-03-08/politics-112244.php?uuid=ACY3lwjC

Main towns voting are
Cosenza Crotone Benevento Caserta Naples Salerno Bologna Ravenna Rimini Pordenone Trieste Latina Rome Savona Milan Varese Isernia Novara Torino Brindisi Cagliari Grosseto
As said by swanarcadian, PD is still leading in national polls but its lead has eroded in the last months. So they could be bound to some kick in the ass in a mid term elections, especially when they ruled badly and were hit by scandals.
Polls (it's not that in Italy they are particularly good) had the PD candidate (incumbent Pisapia is not running again) marginally ahead in Milan. Forza Italia-Lega was running second. PD comfortably ahead in Turin with their incumbent Fassino with 5Stars running second. In Rome Raggi of 5 Stars are ahead and they are expected to win a run off.
As said Bozen was won by PD. It was not exactly a gain because they won last year too but they didn't have a majority in the council chamber (different electoral low up there). They won again the mayoral now but like last only 1 seat majority in the council.

The World Election site (maintained by a member of this forum before he became obsessed with Colombia and kept complaining that nobody was listening to him) had a post on last year's locals. thank you so much For spelling Colombia correctly or demonstrating that at least one person was listening? Either way, you're welcome. Seriously though, sorry I couldn't recall your alias on here. I devoured virtually everything published on that site from when I discovered it until new posts suddenly stopped altogether. If there was little reaction to them, that will be because they were so excellently researched and thoroughly detailed that readers had nothing constructive to add. Back on topic: uh, is the rubbish collected successfully in Naples these days?

First round of the local elections are being held across Italy today, including mayorships of many major cities. Link to Il Sole 24 Ore interactive results page (Italian only).Only Valle D'aosta, Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Sicily are not holding elections. 18% turnout as of right now. M5S is leading in Rome, while PD narrowly leads in Milan, Torino, Bologna, and Cagliari. Non-PD coalition of lefties is leading in Naples. A profile from The Local - Italy, on Virginia Raggi, who will probably become Rome's next Mayor.

All polling places in.
Cagliari, Cosenza and Salerno are confirmed as first round wins along with Rimini.
The centre-right candidate in the Benevento run off is the infamous Mastella...who was switching coalitions every 2 minutes in the Berlusconi-Prodi years.
Trieste: FI/Lega 40.8 PD 29.22 5S 19.16 Pordenone: FI/Lega 45.5 PD 33.2 5S 12.4

In PD-5 Stars run offs the Right vote heavily goes to 5 Stars. It happened in Parma and Livorno in the first 5 Stars wins.
The PD defeat in Rome was expected given all the local problems. However, yes, the margin is really huge. Turin was considered too close to call. So a big disappointment for PD given that Fassino wasn't considered a bad mayor.
PD lost Grosseto, Trieste. They are losing Savona. Right takes Novara. They held Bologna and they are ahead in Ravenna (but closer than should be).
Mastella wins in Benevento. Oh dear.
