The expectations in Rome appear very high - given the way the last mayor departed it's hardly a surprise they have opted for something new but I'll be surprised if she manages to fulfil those expectations.

Can we perhaps say that Renzi's electoral honeymoon is finally over with these results?

I think I understand what Five Star Movement are against. But what are they for? The positive" core of their policies is centered around their environmentalism. - degrowth (or just a steady state economy for some) - sustainable transport (less car dependent) - protecting Italy's architectural and cultural heritage - sustainable development as a general principle (infrastructure, economy, resources) - internet access as a right - environmentalism - direct democracy - non-interventionist foreign policy If it wasn't for the egomania of Grillo and because he has attracted so many mindless populists you could build a coherent platform around their core principles. Whether they will ever develop into a "sane" party and drop the cultism is another matter.

There doesn't seem much to dislike there. Are they still opposed to working with other parties to achieve those aims or does the cultish populism get in the way?

Yes, I am fairly sure they still do (but our resident Italian will know ). They have a deep internal division on immigration between "humanitarians" and others that are for tough measures against illegal immigration, whether for populist reasons or because an increased population necessitates growth/hinders degrowth and sustainability (or both). On the post-Grillo M5S: www.reuters.com/article/us-italy-5star-analysis-idUSKCN0Z01HEThey mention some of their current non-greenie proposals: - universal income support for the poor - tougher penalties on white collar crime and tax evasion - building more prisons - closing down or privatising many publicly owned companies - cutting taxes for small businesses - cutting state pensions - nationalizing the Bank of Italy - referendum on whether Italy should remain in the Euro-zone

There is a nationalist narrative in M5S. "Keep Italy Italian" by preserving its beautiful landscapes and ancient cities against mindless development, big infrastructure projects and sprawl, support small businesses as vital for cities and empower local communities, which are the backbone of Italy, not the corrupt state hijacked by a selfish political caste - which should be brought to heel. Prevent the EU from having too much influence and keep a distance to US foreign policy. "Italy first", not foreign interests or dominance.
Renzi has been rather anti-Green in his policies - both with his support for continued oil drilling (keeping turnout down in the referendum by holding it separately, thus invalidating it) and undermining the power of the independent architectural prefects to stop or halt development projects. And is a pro-development/growth politician. So there is a clear contrast there.

To nuance the EU stuff: While the Euro-referendum is still in their platform they've significantly toned down their anti-Euro and anti-EU rhetoric. Grillo originally wanted to reform the EU to be less meddlesom (aka run-of-the-mill soft Euroscepticism), but increasingly became anti-EU by 2014 and called for an in-out referendum on the Euro. M5S have roughly equal parts soft and hard Euroskepticism, so that was quite divisive.
Their new leadership hasn't exactly disowned Grillo's statements on the EU, but have mostly stopped talking about the proposed referendum while keeping up some criticisms of the "overreach" of the EU and austerity policies. So M5S may - or may not - be about to return to fluffy Euroscepticism after Grillo's hard turn.

Abruzzo:
The counting is painfully slow. With 36/1.633 precincts counted the numbers are quite random (compared to the OpinionPolls):
50% CentroDestra 34% CentroSinistra 12% M5S
The lead of CD in the OpinionPolls was irritatingly small, but such a lead... And those 12% - if they will roughly hold on till the end - would be disastrous for M5S, of course.

Sardegna will go to the polls tomorrow.
In the polls the CentreRight has been a little bit ahead; but so was it in Abruzzo, when the LN-camp ended realiter at 48%. Although the result could be less impressive for CD, as in the Berlusconi-era Abruzzo was ~5% right of Italy, while Sardegna voted 1-2% to the left (like Liguria; Piemonte 0-1% to the right of NationalAverage).

Sardegna, exit poll for RAI:
38.5 CD 37.0 CS 17.5 M5S
Strong number for CS, less so for CD, painful for M5S.

Countng has begun in Sardinia.
With 2% completed, CentroDestra is far ahead (47:35). Those 2% could be rural fringe areas, of course; but in Abruzzo, for example, the numbers during counting haven't moved strongly - so, the OpinionPolls and ExitPolls might have been far off once again.
