It would be funny if Tom Cox decided to continue from where he was so rudely interrupted. There have been past by-elections in the Balham and Tooting, Wandsworth and Wandsworth Central constituencies.

I'd have thought the main requirement would be a candidate with good local connections. The Tories are well organised in Wandsworth, and are likely to run their GE candidate again who has good contacts. Though perhaps not Suliman Gani any more. Indeed! Though a good local BME candidate may tick both boxes....its just given the disgraceful Tory campaign against Sadiq I wonder if the local party might feel disposed to select a BME candidate. It's not as if we are exactly over represented in that regard. Out of interest, how many Labour MPs aren't white?

It's not as if we are exactly over represented in that regard. Unlike Battersea, the CLP is very white , middle class woman dominated. The type who are paid quite a lot to do something or other, but you are not sure what on Lambeth Council or a charity. Only Wandsworth Labour EM Cllr is in North Battersea, and although a pleasant individual, is not really a prospective MP.

It's not as if we are exactly over represented in that regard. Out of interest, how many Labour MPs aren't white? 23 to the Tories' 18. So almost exactly 9.9% of the PLP. 87% of the UK population is white, so Labour is slightly below absolute parity - they'd need roughly 7 more to be completely representative.

Chesterfield Labour councillor Stephen Hitchin announces he's standing for the selection (though not sure he was actually formally invited to by the NEC)

Time to parachute in a national star to a safe seat? Hopefully not. Nobody really likes Ed Balls and no thanks for Mr. David "I lost the leadership race I was entitled to win, so I went away on another continent to pout" Milliband. For any other national star, well, why did you not stand in 2015? Electors and CLPs are not bricks on the road of the ambition. No parachutes.

Whoever stands may well find the Southern Wards going into a Merton or Lambeth MPs seat and the Northern wards going into a Tory seat.

Is there any indication that any of the big Labour names who are out of Parliament have given any indication of interest in the seat? Because I can't find any.
The fact is that it's fun for national media to speculate, but they can only speculate with nationally known names. Allows them then to write a story about how the local party members have snubbed them. The most likely candidate for the seat is someone whom the CLP knows from their local work, who probably hasn't ever been mentioned in national political coverage.

I understand a quick resignation (next week) and snap poll is likely. Possibly 9 June or 16 June. I really think that it would be wrong to have a parliamentary by-election going on in the middle of a referendum campaign. I quite agree - and have to confess to assuming that they would wait until post the referendum campaign and have a polling day mid-July when a portion of the Tory voting 'gentrifying family' vote is on holiday. Clearly not the case though judging by all the comments. As far as dates are concerned - I don't think that it can be the 9th June. My parliamentary by-election timetable maths might be wrong, but local elections on the 9th June have a Noms in of this Thursday (12th), so think that it will have to be a polling day of the 16th with a Noms in of next Thursday (19th) - which would fit with the Labour selection timetable outlined above by andrea

Perhaps it would be a good time for one of the veteran Corbynistas who lost in 2015. There must be some left wing Scots under 70.

So you think Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside & Hillsborough should have waited a couple more months?

I always thought that Steward of the manor of Northstead was classier.

As a South London-bred Ulsterman, I'd like to see the revival of the Steward of the Manor of Kennington, Surrey and the Escheator of Ulster.
