The maps are really odd, but then with these candidates that was always certain.

(This map relies mostly on one produced by a "Tender Branson" from an other forum.)

All major cities except carinthian Villach (60.000 inhab., as RailwayCentre a SPÖ-fortress). I was about to ask about that, wondered if it was Slovene country.

The maps are really odd, but then with these candidates that was always certain. Generally they fit the expectations, I'd say, but e.g. western Tyrol as a left bastion - not what one would have expected once! But Fischer had already performed there very well in 2010 (s.a.) and Tyrol is trending away from ÖVP, SPÖ is loosing ist weakness there in FederalElections:

A map can be bizarre and yet still as expected Very striking that only one borough in Vienna went for Hofer in R2 despite the tiny margin nationally and Vienna being good turf for his party in recent years. I'm not sure whether this is actually encouraging.

I'm not sure whether this is actually encouraging. It's the same now as in GL or IdF, isn't it? Hofer received those -11%, which have been normal for ÖVP&FPÖ since 1945. FPÖ's success in Strache's "HomeLand" after 2006 was an episode.

Great maps, great posts, Georg Ebner. Much appreciated. I was hoping you'd be able to shed light on vdB's success in Tyrol and Upper Austria (outside the cities)?

Great maps, great posts, Georg Ebner. Much appreciated. I was hoping you'd be able to shed light on vdB's success in Tyrol and Upper Austria (outside the cities)? I thank You very much for Your gentle words!!! v.d.Bellen grew up in Tyrol - whose inhabitants have been inclined to LocalPatriotism (inneralpine valley) -, but east of Innsbruck, an area, that generally favoured blue (less his NativeMunicipality). Tourism and an optimistical atmosphere concerning economy alone didn't bring v.d.Bellen majorities in lower Tyrol (which would traditionally be the more open-minded half of the Land); the same problem occurs with Linz compared to the SalzburgAgglo. (The minimal green SemiRing around Graz might be caused by the fact, that only the properCity is booming, already the near surrounding is glooming...) Probably the FPÖ-base and BlueCollars were not low/rare enough in eastern NorthTyrol and eastern EastTyrol. The GREENS' appearence around SalzburgCity has been disappointing since the 1990ies, they were certainly perceived as too left and unserious. A greenish Southern UpperA. ("Salzkammergut" = district Gmunden, home of J.Haider by the way) could be different to UpperStyria because of prosperity and tourism (the famous Hallstadt was top for v.d.B.)

Any exit poll data on ethnicity and/or religion? Hofer must have won white voters of Austrian descent by a solid margin. The voting pattern of some of the Eastern European groups would be interesting.

The voting pattern of some of the Eastern European groups would be interesting. So far this hasn't been researched in those "ExitPolls" (i.e. PhonePolls on ElectionDay). Sometimes special surveys on immigrants' electoral behaviour have been conducted and published some months later. Unfortunately with often dubious and diverging results plus they have split so far only between "Turks" versus the rest, eventually polling "SouthSlaves" extra. Naturally one should differ between SunniticTurks, Alevits, Kurds and Serbs, Croats, Slovenes; but this would require huge SubSamples.

"Haider's doberman" the cath.cons. Stadler - for "odo": Ewald Stadler - had relations to the turkish embassy. But FPÖ's IslamoPhobia left the Erdogan-people over to Red, Green or Abstention. Therefor FPÖ has been campaigning hardly among the second-largest community, the Serbs ("defensors of the Christian AbendLand"), plus Russians and Jews, of course. It was for example revealed, that (all/some) Hofer-posters had been printed in Bosnia's RepublicaSrbska. The (ex)catholic Croats are ÖVP's hope.

Cannot be taken serious. There weren't irregularities to a decisive extend - and the Constitutional Court consists - coincidentally... - of 7 SPÖ(-near) judges and 7 of (or close to) ÖVP (only 2 of these were appointed by ÖVP&FPÖ).
