Bit disappointing for both Labour and UKIP - both down on last year.

I assumed that the Greens were putting in a bit of effort in Riverside cos Peter Cranie is a high profile candidate (former parliamentary candidate for Riverside, lead Green candidate on the NW Euro list etc) and it wasn't likley that the other parties would be putting in any effort there

Greens held up very well in Malvern and a creditable showing in Fylde (in both cases I thought the Indy might have cost us votes) and a second place in Liverpool (it's a two-horse race in Riverside ;D ). I expect the Greens would have benefited from the absence of a Labour candidate in Fylde. That's almost certainly true (I expect the LDs benefitted to some extent too). My comment was more that in both Fylde and Malvern the Green and independant candidates seemed to have similar-ish CVs in term of involvement in the same local campaigns, etc... and I did wonder of that might hurt the Green vote a bit.

Good night for Labour - two good gains in the South East from Con The best thing is that they are in Kent and Essex - two places where we fell furthest in 2010 and where our fightback has been weaker than in the rest of the country. Indeed - although sadly neither is in a remotely winnable constituency under the BCE plans.

It's not really a Green demographic though - I would suggest that Greenbank, where they came second in May, is a much better prospect for the Greens. Hold on - I don't remember the Greens ever winning in Dingle - was he originally a Labour councillor who defected?

OK so he never actually represented Dingle as a Green as he'd have already ,moved to the new St Michaels ward in 2004

John was a Lib Dem (and my deputy when I was on the council executive) and was always on the environmental side of the party.
He really struggled to deal with the reality of running the council and had a tendency to make the best into the enemy of the better so I was not very surprised when he defected.
The Green MEPs have the same issue, it either has to be perfect or they simply won't vote for it so they end up with environmental regulations that are weaker than they had to be simply because if you need the EPP or the S&D on board you have to water it down and if you had the numbers to do a better deal with the Greens you can't because they simply won't negotiate.
I sometimes think thaty if they were the swing vote in getting rid of 99.9% of pollution they would let law be passed that would get rid of 10% sooner than vote for anything that wasn't 100%.
So John is probably better off in the Greens!

Well the Tollesbury Labour party is the traditional wing of the party NOT new Labour. Working with businesses and trade unions local churches and the parish council. The campaign had a 70,s feel about it with "Tollesbury will win with Labour" ! I'm starting a local campaign "I'm backing Tollesbury" to get the locals to use more of our village shops
