It was certainly a Lib Dem hold and the election there this year must have been unopposed.

The minutes of the Town Council meeting on 26th May 2015 where Andrew Pugsley was co-opted says: ( Andrew, who was in attendance at the meeting, thanked the Council and signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office. He added that he was not a member of a political grouping). There had been 3 others wishing to be co-opted but one had withdrawn before the meeting. His election leaflet says: Andy Pugsley had been co-opted onto the Town Council as an independent member in June 2015(actually 26th May 2015). However after seeing the great work of the Liberal Democrats on the Town Council, he has taken the opportunity of the other Councillors (sic) standing down to be elected as a Liberal Democrat. It is possible a Councillor may be at risk of being reported to the Standards Committee if a statement at co-option was not in fact correct.

I'm assuming that Pugsley was co-opted on to the town council as an independent, but then saw that as there was a by-election occurring anyway to fill another vacancy, chose to resign his co-option so as to be able to stand as a Liberal Democrat. Hence why there's two vacancies to fill. In his own small way, he's done a 'Carswell'.

The Conservatives have gained all three seats in Yeovil (the former powerbase of Paddy Ashdown) from the Liberal Democrats.
Yeovil Central Con 153, Lib Dem 124, Lab 86
Yeovil South (2 seats) Con 424/350, Lib Dem 300/247, Lab 120/115.
At the full town council elections in 2007, 2011 and 2015, all Lib Dem candidates were elected, either unopposed or in contests.
In May 2007, Yeovil elected a town council of 22 Lib Dems and 2 no description, from the four town council wards. All wards were contested with a total of 40 candidates – 22 Lib Dems, 11 no description and 7 Labour. There were no Conservative candidates.
In May 2011, Yeovil elected a town council of 23 Lib Dems and 1 Green Party, from the four town council wards. All wards were contested with a total of 43 candidates - 23 Lib Dem, 8 Labour, 6 Centre for Political Change, 4 Conservatives (in Yeovil Central ward), 1 Green Party and 1 Independent.
In May 2015, Yeovil town council was divided into 11 wards, still electing 24 councillors. The new electoral arrangements reflected the new electoral divisions for Somerset County Council, set up in 2013.
In May 2015, Yeovil elected a town council of 20 Lib Dems and 3 Labour. The final place was filled by co-opting an Independent. 6 wards were unopposed and 5 were contested. A total of 30 candidates stood, comprising 20 Lib Dems, 9 Labour and 1 Green Party. There were no Conservative candidates.

The Yeovil South district ward comprises five parish wards (including housing developments which spill across the town boundary into neighbouring parishes): Yeovil Town (Long Mead ward) Yeovil Town (Preston ward) Yeovil Town (South ward) East Coker parish (Wraxhill ward) West Coker parish (Sampson's Wood ward)
East Coker features as the second of T S Eliot's Four Quartets.
