.. must be fairly unique.... Oh dear you committed a sin which is almost up there on this forum with saying 'begging the question' in the wrong context. Prepare for numerous howls of protest (in actual fact it probably isn't all that uncommon anyway)

All three councillors (one Labour, one Tory and one Ind) elected unopposed last May.. Wonder if the by-election will be so uneventful?

(This area is now solidly Labour, but it was safely Conservative long ago.)

Out of interest, does having Conservative relatives mean you are more sympathetic to Tories i.e. you don't think we're all evil? Asking purely because it seems there are so many left-wingers out there who literally know no Conservatives and who do believe that.

In a way, yes, although the fact remains is that no decent human being could sympathise with implementing savage cuts to disabled people's benefits at a time when there are cuts to corporation tax and capital gains tax, both of which have the biggest effect on people with high incomes.

Although I am not one of them, there are some people who believe in a small a state as possible, meaning a small a welfare bill as possible - it's the Lawsonesque fantasy of no subsidies, little benefits and rock bottom tax rates. However, although I have no issue with cuts in corporation tax and capital gains tax, benefits for the disabled cannot be treated like other benefits, as most of the recipients are unable to work due to their disability. This doesn't mean that disabled benefits should never be altered, or even cut, but the people on them should always be protected as they can't protect themselves. Also worth noting that, on this occasion, I agree with IDS' assessment that Osborne is making this particular cut for political, rather than economic, reasons (although Osborne must find some way to balance the books by 2020 or the whole party's credibility will be damaged).

In 2010, he promised to balance them by 2015. He didn't even come close, but the party still had enough credibility to get back into Downing Street. Whether or not a government does what it sets out to do seems to have relatively little impact on what the electorate think of their performance.

So, on balance, they are 'Evil Bastards' then?
