I have been informed by a reasonably reliable source that Croydon councillor Emily Benn (Lab, West Thornton) has resigned as she has a new job in New York. I understand that her resignation as councillor is intended to take place on 24th March. Presumably this is timed to ensure a by-election on 5th May. (There was a bit of ill-feeling last year when a by-election was called early, and held in March, when the main parties would probably have been content to leave the seat vacant until May.)

Iain Angus MacDonald (Oban North and Lorn, Argyll and Bute) has today announced his resignation... Gosh, he was elected on a 9.9% vote share in 2012 .. surely this is a seat that is up this year anyway!

No, Scottish local elections are in 2017 (a consequence of Coalition lenghtening the Westminster term by 1 year, which pushed Holyhood/Welsh Assembly elections by a year, which pushed local Scottish/Welsh local elections by a year). Only the 4th by-election in that seat in this term (and a 5th in 5 years).

If he's giving up one of his seats Ferris Cowper can have some days off .... He's been out of Shermer High School for some years. On the other hand, in that part of Hampshire, he probably does have a friend with a Ferrari in the garage.

Cut and paste is your friend. I've already done that twice, I need something original this time. In 1866 The Greenock Telegraph reported that the council election in Oban "caused a sensation in the town". Unfortunately it doesn't say why. I'll keep looking.
