What was the turnout like? It was in the 40s nationally last time. Just a scrape over 50%, I understand. I can't believe the "missing millions" didn't turn up to deliver a PS landslide!

Regional Exit Polls: Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy: National Front 40.3% Provence, Alpes, Cote d'Azur: National Front 41.2% Auvergne Rhone-Alpes: Republicans 32.0% Brittany: Socialists 34.7% Alsace-Lorraine: National Front 35.0% Languedoc: National Front 30.9% Bourgogne: National Front 32.1% Aquitaine: Socialists 31.5% Normandy: Republicans 28.8% Loire Valley: Republicans 33.9% Central Loire Valley: National Front 30.5% Corsica: Diverse Left 18.9%, Corsican Independents 18.9% So it doesn't seem like NF will be worried about their 2 'good prospect' seats...

So we fight fascism in Syria, because the French ask us to, and the French elect fascists to run France.

Me thinks sour grapes is going to be an increasingly consistent theme of Mike's posts over the 15/20 period. More seriously, if Sarkozy thinks he's the answer after these results for his party...... well.

We didn't, by a very clear majority But for me these results sum up why there is no consistency in what is claimed about the whole affair.

PS withdrawing in regions where it is third and the FN are first. does that apply to Normandie? surely they have plenty of list partners there.

Reports that the FN have come a narrow second in Normandy, which is a surprise. I don't know. My dad lives in Normandy, admittedly close to the Breton border (where things are a but different), and I've picked up a fair bit of pro FN feeling.

Surprisingly FN was first at the EP-election in the Beauce and is now also in the Orleanais and GaronneValley.

ALSACE-CHAMPAGNE-ARDENNE-LORRAINE They are trying to create a con/lab/green list I would doubt the success of that and it will damage the proposers of each of the constituent parties, and if successful it will increase the FN vote.

ALSACE-CHAMPAGNE-ARDENNE-LORRAINE They are trying to create a con/lab/green list Electoral suicide in Alsace. I can't think of a region of France where the Centre-Right voters are more intransigent.

Current state of play from Le Monde:
FN- head the list in PACA, Languedoc-Roussillon, Alsace-Lorraine-Champagne-Ardenne, Centre-Val de Loire, Nord-Pas de Calais-Picardie, Bourgogne-Franche Comte.
UDI/Les R/MoDem- Pays de la Loire, Normandy, Auvergne, Ile-de-France.
PS et al: Brittany, Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes
However you try and think about it, this is a disaster for the PS and a stonking victory for the FN. The final victors come the second round might well turn out to be the centre-right though.
To give a flavour of how much things have changed, some of the voting on a departmental basis is astounding. In Centre-Val de Loire, the FN came out on top in all four departments, including Cher, which was (and arguably is) a long-standing base of the PCF. They came top in all but one of Bourgogne-Franche Comte's departments, including the left-nationalist stronghold of Chevenement, Territoire de Belfort. To my astonishment, they have even ended up on top in Seine-Maritime, a hotbed of the PS and PCF and home to the Left's citadels of Le Havre and Dieppe. Current reports suggest that the FN came out on top in Tourcoing, Roubaix and Cambrai. This is historic stuff.
