Random notes:
Boring week for Liberal Democrats, they have no candidate this week (which isn't surprising since they had no candidates in those wards last time) and a total of 3 candidates in those 5 wards since 2003 (North Aryshire 2008 and one in both Telford & Wrekin wards in 2003) and they finished last in every case. So, there was probably not much to expect even if they stood.
Family links and independents:
In Neath Port Talbot, the Labour candidate is the son of the late councillor.
In North Ayrshire, the SNP candidate is the widow of the late councillor. The independent there might have some impact, since he was the editor of local newspaper (Largs and Millport News) for 40 years until the end of September.
On Canvey Island, the independent is the chairman of the "Friends of Concord Beach".
In Newport West, the independent is a town councillor (but for Newport East ward).

I vaguely remember one by-election somewhere in the Highlands or Moray or something where I went heavily on a former editor of the local rag in a prediction competition and I got burnt badly

In Neath Port Talbot, the Labour candidate is the son of the late councillor. I wonder whether they are related to Noel Crowley, former leader of the council.

The Canvey Island East by-election in Castle Point will determine the future control of the council.
Following the elections on 22 May 2014, UKIP gained 5 seats from the Conservatives and technically the Conservatives lost overall control. The make-up was Conservative 20, Canvey Island Independent Party (CIIP) 16, UKIP 5.
The immediate disqualification of Gail Barton, confirmed formally at the annual meeting of Castle Point Borough Council on 4 June 2014, meant that the balance at the annual meeting reverted to 20-20 - and the Conservatives were able to maintain control of Castle Point through the casting vote control of the outgoing mayor. The Conservatives formed the Cabinet and appointed the mayor and deputy mayor.
If, as seems likely, CIIP holds their seat in Canvey Island East, the CIIP-UKIP coalition will have an overall majority of 1.

I suppose I have a bit of egg on the face. Annoying. I'm very sorry for that error and shows I should check the by-elections which happened before writing the heading (And read the dates of the newspaper articles).

Is Ironbridge stuffed full of Guardianistas or something?

Thats what I thought, but the Labour councillor who died was only elected in 2011. Maybe the previous councillor had a personal vote.

The ward includes Coalbrookdale as well, but a quick look at the Census statistics doesn't uncover anything which would explain a large Labour vote.

Is Ironbridge stuffed full of Guardianistas or something? When our council Chief Exec was a senior council planning officer at the old Telford Borough back in the nineties he lived in Ironbridge so perhaps you're right. In that part of the world I expect it would fit the public sector professional mindset very well living there.

You're thinking along the right lines (a lot of teachers live in the ward for instance) but probably its the combination of those with other factors. There's an artsy undercurrent to the entire area between Much Wenlock and Dawley, for instance (not that this always shows itself in voting patterns, but whatever). There are also a lot of people employed in the building trades in the ward; in built-up areas in Shropshire this is usually good news for Labour. And, obviously, Shropshire being Shropshire you can't rule out the importance of popular (or unpopular!) local candidates and so on. Dave Davies was quite high profile and had been a councillor (for a different ward) before and was the leader of the council back in the late 90s.
