And Concord Rangers have surpassed Canvey Island FC as the premier club. Canvey Island were at one time in the Conference, but have now sunk to the depths of non-league Step Three, whereas Concord have been promoted to Step Two (Conference South), I think. Clearly this means that the Canvey Island Independents are on the way out, to be replaced in due course by a new hegemonic bloc based on brand Concord. I also believe the Canvey Island ground may be below sea level - it looked it when I visited - so they may be inundated too.

And Canvey could have been in the First round too but lost their replay 3-0 to Havant and Waterlooville on Monday night. Concord's nickname is, of course, the Beach Boys.

About Canvey Island. The CIIP leaflet was atrocious and talked about Canvey Island being the most English town of England. Is it possible than it backfired and than anti-UKIP/pro-immigration voters decided to not vote for CIIP? link

From his twitter page, the Independent winner in Newport West/Telford&Wrekin, seems to be very opposed to Conservatives, but likes Diane Abbott, Chuka Umunna and the Telford Labour MP.

Dunp of a place.

Willingly, I had to suffer there a few weeks ago.
That's the first time I've been described as a 'top Tory' outside a Lib Dem leaflet.

Is that why the labour vote also crashed there alongside the conservatives? I suppose so. Ideologically, he is perhaps close to Conservatives, I don't know. But, locally, Conservatives are ruling and he is clearly opposing them, perhaps for ideological reasons, perhaps because he doesn't like the way they manage Newport. Some Labour voters might have liked that, especially than Labour can't win there (and I suppose most Labour ressources went to Ironbridge instead of there).

Some Labour voters might have liked that, especially than Labour can't win there (and I suppose most Labour ressources went to Ironbridge instead of there). It does happen sometimes. I recall in Marlow, Bucks, an Independent councillor, Ruth Jewell, who was regularly elected to the council with large majorities. She always stood on her own as an Independent. However, we in the Labour party certainly knew that she voted for us at general elections, even though no doubt many of her voters would have been surprised - she was the archetypal 'posh lady'. But she was a good councillor, and got things done, so I think they would have voted for her anyway.

Isn't T&W Labour run since 2011? Not apparent at all from his social feeds, where he often complains about local Conservatives, not Labour. Things like "Newport Tories are clinging to power". I suppose he is talking about issues on the town council.

Top Tory: 'Canvey Island is a dump and the Medway towns are a cesspit' Please share your thoughts on Thurrock with us Arthur And he lives in Deptford which is of course heaven of earth! Canvey of course gave us the incomparable Dr Feelgood so can be forgiven everything. It also used to be the constituency with the highest proportion of owner occupied property.
