Ironically the lib dems are absent in Newport again Why ironically? They actually won 3 of the 4 Newport wards in 2003 (they only lost in West which was won by an Independent). In 2007, they lost their 3 seats (there was no LD in their seat of South even if they were the incumbent, but lost East (54-46) and North (55-45) in close races). But, in 2011, no LD candidate anywhere in Newport. It's wierd.

Weird, but not necessarily ironic.

Surely this beg's the question of what ironic means People who act as though language is fixed rather than constantly evolving in terms of meaning, pronounciation and, in some cases, spelling.

The meaning of ironic may well shift over time, but I can't think of a currently understood meaning that would apply to a telling but by no means unique symptom of Lib Dem decline, unless there was something else said or done that I'm unaware of. Hence my initial question.

They actually won 3 of the 4 Newport wards in 2003 ... I assume you mean 2004. There were no elections there in 2003.

Report that Colin Letchford (Ind) has won in Canvey Island, which is a surprise if true.

There was a straw in the wind on saturday as Concord Rangers beat St Albans City 1-0 to qualify for the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time ever. They are named after Concord beach....
