Don't kid yourself on this one, Pimp! It is shaping up to be a solid Conservative win, despite the unfortunate choice of candidate. He was more wrong than you, but you weren't right either. We can't call that a close result, either, but I'm sure you don't mind at all. Congratulations to Kent UKIP.

So two Lib Dem gains plus a decent swing in Tudor, that'll do me. Is Westfield in York Central or Outer?

TBF thats clearly a tactical vote and something local going on. LDs aren't up 24 nationally! But yes - you are kicking our bottoms in poor and isolated areas of the SE.

Joe, the old York seat used to be a Conservative seat in a good year. You can't survive if these towns and cities go LD or Labour and the fringes of the East and South East go to us. Scotland and the big urban conurbations have already gone. How is it that you also lost the Yorks, Strouds, Baths, Yeovils, etc.? What do you think went wrong?

I haven't known a byelection so hard to call as the Sheppey central ward last night. We genuinely went into the count thinking Labour might have snuck in! The tory 'stronghold' of Eastchurch had a very low turnout, as did the new housing in Thistle Hill, whilst only the Minster areas seemed busy (comparatively). We knew that's where Labour had been focussing their efforts and they had put far more work in than the Tories had. Knowing they were still out knocking up after 8 really depressed us and we felt totally outgunned. Towards the start of the campaign we'd had a good reaction and we were talking about a 50-60% UKIP win, but after the postal votes went out we just couldn't seem to get any momentum, and our contact rates were dreadful - we just couldn't find hardly anyone in, and the only 'yeses' we were getting had already voted! In the end, Eastchurch was about 80% UKIP. We were stronger in the new housing than we had imagined - we had actually pulled a last minute leaflet from this area as we just weren't sure what the mood on the estate was at all. It was clear from the count that the Tories were expecting victory, and frankly I don't blame them for expecting it. Very happy with the final result

Very happy with the final result A comprehensive result indeed. Many congratulations. UKIP are now the third biggest party on Swale BC! The only Conservative comment I have found is 'oh dear'.

Not a bad night for the Lib Dems. We got a cracking result in York, a reasonable one in Richmond, and a good win in Rutland.
With a UKIP gain, and the other parties holding seats, there was something for everyone last night.
(Did someone say Greens? Who are they?)

It looks like a pretty poor night overall for Labour, down just about everywhere apart from Thurrock where they must be relieved to have withstood the UKIP challenge.

The result in Sheppey was amazing and is a credit to Pimp and his colleagues but I thought the other two seats where we were challenging were quite disappointing (I should specify perhaps that the two I'm referring to are in Fenland and Thurrock as in the event we weren't that much further from winning in Bolton than in Thurrock)
