Green Party candidate is Chris Southall. He has stood as our candidate in the constituency at previous general elections and lives in Clacton.

As already mentioned two posts previously It arguably belongs in the useless facts section anyway. The Conservative Party is clearly the liberal party of southern England and will be the principal challengers to UKIP, the conservative party of southern England. What function the Liberal Democrats offer is rather non-obvious. I don't think that the Conservative party is 'liberal', though - any more than the Labour party is 'socialist' There are liberals in the Conservative party, but there are plenty of dyed-in-the-wool conservatives too - witness Bob Woollard and the Grassroots Conservatives, and all those fulminating constituency chairs who don't like same-sex marriage On one level Carswell is a liberal, but he is socially quite conservative. Whereas the LibDems seem to have people like Clegg who are liberal, but also a fair few social democrats...

There are two candidates in the Conservative 'open primary'. Sue Lissimore, Colchester borough councillor for Prettygate ward since 2006. Chairman of Colchester Conservative Association. Giles Watling, an actor. Tendring district councillor for Frinton ward since 2007. Right. Let's just say that this isn't really the contest of the high-flyers. And that the Tories have already recognised they aren't going to win this one

Looks like a lively, youthful audience... Compared with the average population of Clacton, probably yes...

Yes, but the picture was clearly taken while the hustings was not underway (and probably propagated in preference to other pictures from the event with a particular intent). I suspect a decent proportion of the crowd were getting refreshments or similar.

Two came to select a candidate, 248 came because they smelled a tombola.

"All eyes are focused on Scotland, but on the eastern edge of England, 2014's other great political revolt is in full effect. In the first of a new four-part series titled Britain's in trouble, John Harris travels around Ukip's eastern heartlands and finds poverty, anger and the breakdown of normal politics. From the forgotten residents of Jaywick, England's poorest council ward, to an encounter with Nigel Farage at the Royal British Legion, he finds out how a force made up largely of Tory exiles has managed to style itself as a party for the working class": www.theguardian.com/politics/video/2014/sep/15/ukip-england-east-world-upside-down-video?CMP=twt_gu
