Parris is primarily a journalist concerned with selling copy, not a strategist concerned with winning seats. To treat anything he writes in any other light would be a mistake. In other words, the more controversial the better - people are talking about his article, so he has succeeded.

I canvassed for UKIP yesterday, in Great Holland. A mixture of average housing, well-heeled, and very posh. I'd estimate 55% were backing Carswell, some very enthusiastically. Clacton didn't seem to me the basket case that Parris thinks it is. Much of it seemed rather smart to me, especially on the sea-front. ( St. Osyth and Jaywick are very poor though). I thought his article was horribly condescending. writing off the Clactons of this world seems like electoral suicide to me. My impression was similar and I've posted a comment on the UKPR thread making the same points more or less. Funnily enough I was also canvassing in Great Holland. I found even higher levels of support, but where I canvassed was not a mixture of housing it was all of a type - bungalows occupied by pensioners. Carswell is clearly a very popular local MP I was hoping to make it up for the 10am opening but that was never really likely and got up there for about midday. Bob Spink had signed the visitors register at the UKIP shop just before me and Nigel Farage signed just after me.

Yes, few people enjoy the gleeful dismissal of provincial towns as much as the richer people that live in them. Indeed so, Plymouth is an excellent example.

Until the Times disappeared behind the pay wall I was an avid reader of Parris' columns, not because I always agreed with him but because he was a good writer who wrote interesting and thought provoking articles. The kind of crap that he wrote about Clacton is certainly not typical of the way he used to be but maybe he has changed in recent years.

I made a prediction on UKPR about a week ago that turnout might rise in the by-election compared to the general election. It's interesting to read the report from UKIP that they got that impression as well. My reasoning was that the 64% turnout in 2010 was a bit on the low side and maybe this was because Clacton voters weren't particularly enthusiastic about any of the party leaders.
The closest example I can think of is Crewe and Nantwich in 2008. The 2005 turnout was 60.0% and the by-election turnout was 58.2%.

He is a pale substitute for the late great Bernard Levin.

"Dear Matthew Parris: if the Tories abandon the working class to Ukip, they will deserve to lose 2015
I’m writing this blog at midnight: the angry hour. The hour when you’re only awake because you’ve spotted something that infuriates you and – damn it – you have to put every furious thought down. They teach this process in anger management, apparently. Talk through what went wrong from beginning to end and maybe it’ll all make sense.
What went wrong is that Matthew Parris wrote an article for The Times. A very ugly article indeed. He took a trip to Clacton, the seat being contested in a by-election by Tory/Ukip defector Douglas Carswell, and Matthew was not impressed by what he found. He found a bit of Britain that isn’t London."blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/timstanley/100285407/dear-matthew-parris-if-the-tories-abandon-the-working-class-to-ukip-they-will-deserve-to-lose-2015/

As already mentioned two posts previously It arguably belongs in the useless facts section anyway. The Conservative Party is clearly the liberal party of southern England and will be the principal challengers to UKIP, the conservative party of southern England. What function the Liberal Democrats offer is rather non-obvious.
