The turnout in Carfax is said to be a whopping 8.6%. Worse then the Police & Crime Commissioner in West Midlands. Should we abolish Oxford City Council?

Yes, I thought something like this may happen ... if I had had more courage of conviction I'd have predicted more accurately. This very odd byelection in a very odd place will have come down to the organisation of postal votes in the absence of regular voters.* The Greens are less organised than Labour and the Lib Dems, and the Conservatives hardly at all. *I wonder how many people actually turned up at polling stations today.
The above about Oxford Carfax, not Wymondham Town Council!

Guess there may have been a lot of students? In which case, why call it before they return from hols? The result gives you one reason. Labour held a seat which would have been very difficult to hold otherwise. Another problem is that you say the students would "return". In fact when term begins in October the student population is going to be at least a third different to June. Now that we have IER, the colleges can't go and register them all en bloc. There won't be many who individually register. It won't be until December at the earliest, and probably not until May next year, that the electoral register in Carfax at all matches the population actually resident there.

Guess there may have been a lot of students? In which case, why call it before they return from hols? 71% full time students, 74% aged 18-29. I implied above it may have been called by Labour for this time to make sure they'd win.

Makes something of a mockery of democracy to be honest.

Old Dean Labour 290 Con 196 UKIP 171
Turnout 20%
Labour hold. The new councillor Heather Gerred is the daughter of the late Margaret Moher whose sad death caused the by-election.

Is Old Dean based on a council estate or is it the middle of Camberley / Frimley? It's just the estate in north-east Camberley; London Road is the sourthern boundary and Olddean Common is the western edge.

Is Old Dean based on a council estate or is it the middle of Camberley / Frimley? It's right on the northern edge of the town beyond the London road. It's a post-war overspill estate originally taking in people from those parts of Surrey which are now in Greater London, and was, and is, looked down upon by much of the rest of the town.

Council estate. Over 42% social housing in 2011 census which is very high nowadays.
I thought UKIP would do better there, especially in the light of the last week.
